'There ain't no Hayley without Roy': An emotional Julie Hesmondhalgh pays tribute to her Corrie co-star as she collects Serial Drama Performance Award at 2014 NTAs

Julie Hesmondhalgh has paid tribute to her Coronation Street co-star David Neilson as she led the winners at the 2014 National Television Awards.

The 43-year-old actress, who bowed out of the ITV1 soap after 16 years on screen as Hayley Cropper this Monday, was visibly emotional as she took to the stage in front of the great and good of the British small industry.

Collecting the Best Serial Drama Performance prize at London's The O2 on Wednesday night, the soap star arrived on stage with David - who played her on-screen husband Roy Cropper - and thanked her 'Corrie family' for all their help throughout her stint on the cobbles.

'There ain't no Hayley without Roy': Julie paid tribute to her 'amazing' co-star as they collected the award together

She said: 'We said that if either of us was lucky enough to win tonight then we'd come up here together because there ain't no Hayley without Roy and there's no Roy without Hayley.

'Just thank you so much to our Corrie family, all the way through you've supported me. I'm not going to try and name everyone but you know how I feel about you all, I love and miss you.'

Julie also thanked the soap's storyline team for her final performance, which saw her Coronation Street alter-ego diagnosed with terminal cancer, before ending her own life with help from her husband.

I haven't actually seen yet as I like to keep a week behind with my Coronation Street, but this storyline is pretty much what got me back into the soap after not watching since just after the demise of the murderer Richard Hillman a good few years ago.

Well deserved for years of acting, Hayley and Roy are like Jack and Vera - it's hard to imagine one without the other.
