Ukraine revolution: Britain offers cash to Kiev as the world waits on Putin

Amid fears Russia could send troops into Ukraine and mystery over its ousted president, George Osborne says Britain will be ready 'with a chequebook' to help 'rebuild' country

Britain has offered to help fund an international financial rescue package for Ukraine amid mounting fears that Russia may intervene following the country's revolution.

George Osborne, the Chancellor, said that Britain and other countries will be ready “with a chequebook” to help “rebuild” Ukraine following the bloody violence that has seen 88 killed and hundreds more injured.

Amid growing fears that Russia could send troops into the country and mystery over the whereabouts of Viktor Yanukovych, the ousted president, Mr Osborne joined American and European leaders in pledging financial support to Ukraine.

Senior American diplomats have warned Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, that it would be a “grave mistake” to send military forces into Ukraine.

However, Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said that Ukraine’s opposition have failed to abide by a peace deal signed on Friday and had “in effect seized power in Kiev”.

European Union officials will travel to Kiev on Monday in a bid to help broker a financial package to assist the country as Ukrainian politicians struggle to form a government in the next 24 hours.

Mr Putin last night attended the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics and is yet to formally respond to frantic diplomatic efforts urging him not to respond with a show of military force.

“We are here ready to help just as soon as there is someone at the end of the telephone,” Mr Osborne said.

He added: “We should be there with a chequebook to help the people of Ukraine rebuild their country.”

Britain “will send a very strong message” that there will be financial support for Ukraine through the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, he added.

No money for expensive cancer drugs for you taxpaying Britons... we've got to pay for the Indian space programme. No money for dredging the rivers down in Somerset... we've got to pay for the damage caused by mobs in Kiev.

It's funny because the other day when I came home and this was on the news, my Dad said to me "no matter what happens, you just know that Britain will be paying for it" and the government have proved him right within a matter of days.

In a way I kind of want Russia to invade half or all of the country now...... at least then we won't be paying for Ukraine, won't have to suffer mass immigration from Ukraine in the event that it joins the EU and won't be perpetually paying for another blood sucker on the other side of Europe. How 'cruel' and 'uncaring' of me? Britain is what I care about and the taxpayer living here who seem to have to pay for the rest of the world literally ALL the time. It's got to stop.

Maybe it's time the oil-rich Arabs or wealthy Chinese got their chequebooks out.

Thoughts?
