Looks decent. The set-up they have is awful (the calendar and store on the right) but presumably these can be moved around so it's thinner. It was a bit too much of a step in a different direction that it shocked people.

It's about time. I like what they've done with it actually, it'll be interesting to see what else they've done.

Exactly the same here! I'm being provided with a new laptop that has Windows 8 and I don't have a choice to downgrade it so will be pleased to see this addition, although, I have used Windows 8 and quite like it anyway.

There has been rumours for months but when 8.1 was announced everyone thought the start menu would return.

Is anyone else surprised like me. I didn't expect them to actually bring it back. I understand why they have brought it back, but thought they wanted everyone to use the metro interface thus removing the start menu as an option. I don't mind the metro interface and like a lot of 8/8.1 users have gotten used to it, probably because we had to. A lot of the people who dislike the metro start screen I've found tend to be people who've not tried it.

On another note, I'd like to hope they've changed the way metro tiles move around but I doubt it. On windows phone you can move right to left and up and down however on the desktop if you try and replace a metro tile from below to above instead of just changing the two tiles it pushes the tiles to the right which I've always found a bit backwards

Wait some people actually use the tiles and apps instead of making it so that the machine works properly

Does what you want it to do without unnecessarily clogging up CPU in order to make something go swoosh

Never had an issue with the start screen anyway and noticed that I never used it or the start menu and just used the "search" function. Never seen a hit in performance using the start screen either but I guess I wouldn't when I have a decent system.

I've got used to not having it, and I just use the search search to open apps that aren't on my taskbar - but it'll definitely be a welcome addition/revival :).

Does anyone think they might get rid of it again? I think they want a unified look but the problem was windows 8 was a very sudden big change. I wouldn't be surprised if they are planning to gradually change things now

Well it's possible they *might* do that again in the future but I have a feeling they won't. Instead they will continue to develop on the new hybrid start menu and maybe give the user more options on what hey want to use? Although you never know with companies like Microsoft. But with the more recent management changes and a new CEO it might be a good thing :P

i reckon they'll separate the operating systems to pcs / tablets.

I think they want something cross platform though. The idea with windows 8 has always been an operating system that flows easy from PC, to tablet to phone. The problem was the change was a big leap for many and they focused too much on the mobile/tablet side and not enough on the traditional desktop side which they are now seem to be fixing

Really good idea to bring it back

Going to be good for window users well by popular demand.

Microsoft going back on their decision, could look to some people like they're admitting they failed in some respects.
Too big of a change too soon, keep it simple with easy access to important programs and folders through the traditional start menu.

I'm still on Windows 7 and have no issue with it so see no reason to upgrade.

Visa was worse than 8 due to the performance and other issues that it had when it was first launched.

Well if Apple removed a core function/feature that has been in it's OSX operating system since day 1 pretty much then you may see the same sort of reaction. (Depending on what it is) that's why there was a big fuss over it. As everyone who has used Windows knows about the traditional start button and menu and how to use it. With them removing it in Windows 8 as you know it and replaced it with the start screen it caused a lot of confusion and people didn't know how to use it and wanted the old way back.

Nah they probably would pretend they liked the new feature not wanting to offend their beloved Apple or at least that's the feeling I get from talking to a lot of Apple fans.

Not from what I remember, but it doesn't mean it wasn't.

Honestly, I don't like the whole look of Windows 8. The Xbox 360 had the same look prior to the official release of Windows 8, and it was too condensed.

I moved from Windows to Apple after 10+ years and still don't feel the need for a start menu, searching is so much easier then clicking through files, no matter what the OS is.

Remember people used to use it without the start menu before Windows 95 and then when 95 came out the Start menu was introduced, but I reacon people by then are dead now lol. I don't know why they randomly thought they'd remove it now. All to anything I'd say. Although it was and a GOOD feature and easy to get access to your recent and known programs/folders. So glad they're sticking to it and bringing it back :D

God this don't make sense! LOL screw you Micro$meg! LOL

Yeah I got it cheap as I heard they planned to do a lot of smaller free and cheap updates. I wouldn't have upgraded at full price unless I had to

Since when did the Start Menu return to the Windows 8.1 Update? I only see a little change and that's saying something about Microsoft! I don't see no old Start Menu back? Still that big screen one everytime I click the flag.
