do lyrics in songs have to mean something to you or can you listen to anything that sounds good?

have you been put off a song by it's lyrics before? and do you feel you have to relate to the artist to like them?

It depends on the genre. The lyrics are very important to me when it comes to rock music.
Lyrics aren't so important to me in House, trance and dance music.

It depends quite a bit on the artist and type of song. There are a few songs that I like only because of their lyrics and because I can relate to them. But sometimes I find a song that I love because of the beat and tune. Sometimes I can't even understand the lyrics but it's a good song lmao

Depends on type of music really.

But generally yes.

i'd say that it depends on the type of music too

a lot of slow tempo stuff i think the songs need to be lyrically strong whereas for more fast tempo stuff it doesn't matter as much. i have been put off songs that have bad lyrics though, can't really think of any on the spot but i'll post if i remember. for the majority of my music though i tend to listen to slow singer/songwriter stuff and listen to lyrics more than anything else. i don't neccaserily need to relate to the lyrics either, as long as they're singing about something relevant to them i'll listen to it, it's kinda weird but for me i feel it's almost as if i was watching a film, learning about their experiences through music

it really depends for me on the genre, like i mainly listen to either electronic/house/edm/dance or indie stuff, and for the first obviously the tune and beat and everything is far more important for me, though good lyrics will still boost it but i couldnt care so much. for the indie stuff i do care a lot more though and good lyrics do generally decide on whether or not i like the songs, but i still put the melody/overall sound as number one most important even with that though

Yes, that's how i like/dislike a song. Well, not to mention that the beat is also take into consideration to determine how well it is suited with the lyrics.

Most of my favourite songs don't have lyrics, so no.

Not really for me. I like singing along but the lyrics don't normally 'mean something'. Plus quite a few of the artists I listen to either have lyrics that make no sense, have lyrics in another language, or don't have any lyrics at all.

I'd hold the music more in regard, which is why i don't mind listening to music in other languages that i don't know. but i also appreciate the lyrics as it could be a huge turn off when you listen to songs that literally revolves around break ups and relationships (taylor swift). then again, the importance of the elements of songwriting depends on the music genre. so it's the vocals + music that usually attracts me first, but what keeps me listening to a song or an album again and again is often both

It depends. Sometimes I might like a song but don't understand the meaning of it, but at the same time if the lyrics are obviously crap it might put me off e.g. all the lyrics in friday ha.

I do listen to some singer songwriter stuff, David Ford being a favourite, so the lyrics are important and sometimes do reach me.

Generally speaking the catchiness i.e. the tune is more important because that's what makes me want to listen to it over and over again. The lyrics is like the cherry on top which makes the song even better. Like John Legend - All Of Me, I can appreciate the lyrics and the tune is good so yeh, overall great song :D

(was just about to sign off with Will until I remembered that I don't do that anymore lol)

Sometimes - sometimes I really like songs because they have a really good beat and I don't care about the lyrics. Other songs I adore because I can relate to the lyrics personally.

I like figuring out what the lyrics mean at times. Nice to know what the song means.

I like certain songs because they're fun and catchy, I only really care about the lyrics when I'm playing songs around other people because I don't want them to be like 'uh.. wot.'
