I think to promote to get new members, each new member when they sign up gets 1 week worth of normal vip, this might help them see the VIP features, then they might get addicted to habbox, when it runs out they - want more so they enter compeitions and events etc...
Thoughts? Maybe have it so its non transferrable? I thought maybe when they sign up, they get a PM saying something like this
'Welcome blah blah blah, heres the curret compeitions, would love you to enter... Heres today events, it would be lovely to see you to come to one... Something here to start this next sentence.. We are giving you 1 week of free vip, just reply to this PM saying which colour you would like,
[list colours and all features]! Kind Regards, Matthew or whoever!'
Thoughts?

No.
We give away way too much VIP as it is through competitions and seasonal events etc.

That's the current Welcome PM unless it has been edited since I joined :P

I see no problem with this, it's always been the case that we have a huge influx of people signing up and then hardly any of them staying/being active so if after all these years we're going to finally start combating that problem it can only be a good thing. If it's only a week and non-transferable then why not

For 1 week and being non transferable?

It's still pointless.
Then they might assume that's normal and quit when they find out you can't view who repped you and whatever else you get with VIP, and then it's down to colour as some people might hate specific ones (and most colours look ugly on specific skins).
It's unnecessary imho and I can't see someone sticking about because they have 1 week of VIP.

People won't stick about because they have VIP, if people sign up then rarely post then they obviously don't like the content or discussions on the forum. Not because they have a non bold blue username.

give them habbo rewards coz they're thirsty and dont care about the forum

I can't see it working. I doubt it's about what you can do as a member, you use a forum for discussion rather than the the VIP perks such as who has repped you - and as a new member these perks aren't really that useful and how would you control the colour of their names? If I was given a pink shirt when signing up for a society and had it removed a week later I would feel kind of insulted, especially if no one really welcomed me or nothing in the society really engaged me.
EDIT: If they're coming from Habbo maybe engage them on Habbo and get them to engage in the forum somehow? If there are the same faces turning up at events then that may be the first problem.

Phil is on limited activity so there may not be a reply very quickly :)
There are already a lot of opportunities to gain VIP through methods that are more fun than just signing up - events, comps etc

give too much to the new members means the old members go...
if they get vip straight away they wont know wat its like to not have it and wont feel the benefit
maybe after like...2 or 3 wks but not straight away

Benefits of being a Habbox VIP
Access to an exclusive VIP Forum
A coloured name of your choice from the selection
A custom user title
To be able to change your Forum user name
An avatar of 150 pixels by 150 pixels
A signature maximum sizelimit of 700 pixels by 300 pixels (W x H)
A profile picture of 250 pixels x 250 pixels
A PM storage capacity of 800 messages
Ability to see who gave you reputation
Option to make yourself invisible
Be able to close your own threads
I can't see how new members would really know how to do half of these in a week and some of them really depend on your activity (seeing who repped you, VIP forum, forum name changing, user title and PM capacity).
Where do new members tend to come from? You could start with that and expand it.

Yeah maybe the events staff could-
oh never mind
Reward the VIP after a certain amount of posts or being a member for 1wk, not Automatically. Current system offers 2wks VIP for posting 100 times and considering we have members here that have not yet reached the thousand mark after being here for years perhaps that is somethig that needs to be revised. I would say 20-50 posts within a 2 week period for a 1-2 week subscription of VIP is a far trade and will give people a taster of VIP features and make them want to unlock more perhaps. All of this is certainly somethig that should be considered to be integrated into the achievement system -- if that's happening. And no goldenmerc giving VIP to new users has no effect on older ones as they are already established members, post regardless of reward (as shown by very few older members cashing in their tokens among other things) and - I would hope- would welcome any opportunity to increase ad retain the user base.

I personally think it could backfire and push away the new and/or some old users, for reasons already mentioned e.g. new members getting used to the VIP features and thinking they're normal. I think what @Kyle (http://www.habboxforum.com/member.php?u=30795); has suggested is a lot more reasonable - 100 posts is definitely a lot, I would personally consider having it as low as 25. And lower the subscription to 1 week if you have too.
Inseriousity.

Actually as comps manager, I recall that people do tend to stick around if they have VIP, it makes them feel like they've got a commitment not to waste it although it's true that it may be the winning that is the bigger factor so whether it'd work right at the beginning is debatable.

To be honest, when I first joined the forum, I didn't even know how to make a thread never mind all of that.

Are there any genuine negatives to this? They'd only get the VIP if they bother to ask for it, so it only affects those who are willing to give us an actual try rather than the multitudes who make accounts and never use them, and it would definitely be a good welcome to those few who let's face it we need to keep around if we can

I actually think it's a good idea. When I signed up I was pretty happy and even with the welcome thing telling me the benefits I still didn't understand or appreciate how valuable it actually is till I won some.

It is happening and is something we could definitely integrate with the achievements system. We could work it like 20 posts = 1 week vip, 50 posts = 2 weeks...etc.
I think it might encourage new members. I think a week is fair too.. Everyone likes a colourful name :P

Maybe it would be worth looking at the weekly statistics and see how many posts most people are making and then go from there? Say most active users post between 10 and 30 posts a week (just an example, I don't know if it's true).. so maybe make 35 posts = VIP?
I do like the idea of x posts = 1 week and y posts = 2 weeks though :D

So are you saying you want Chris to go through your posts when you started to see if you qualify? As soon as he does it for you everyone will want it!!!

This would be for new member only and would not have any time constraint (IMO) so new people are encouraged to begin posting frequently and hopefully stick around to extend their rewards. Also the current welcome pm uses the word hopefully - this implies uncertainty and should be avoided.

Okay sorry I haven't replied sooner but I've been on Limited Activity. This is what I'm thinking at the moment.
I think it's quite a good idea but as someone cleverly stated, a week-old user won't know what to do with VIP so there's probably not a lot of point to it. There's also a lot of people who only sign up and then they never come on again so it would be quite pointless.
I think to renew the current system would be a much better idea. I'm thinking we could make it something like.
In your first fortnight at HabboxForum, you could earn yourself some VIP by posting around the Forum. For 25 posts in the next two weeks, we will grant you 1 Week VIP, for 50 posts we will grant you 2 weeks of VIP and for 100+posts we will grant you 1 Month of VIP.
[insert benefits of vip here]
Thoughts on that?

How would it encourage new members? It will encourage new members to stay but I don't think it will create new members. Humans are not born with the innate ability to understand VIP features :P These benefits may keep them interested, but to encourage new members surely you need to do something else? It's not like joining a gym because it's free the first week - monetary incentives are different to incentives which won't benefit people until they're active.

Just wondering, has a new member actually claimed the current new member bonus?
