Take part in our research project!

All UK Habbos from 16 - 25 yrs old are invited to take part in our
British Academy Research Project. There are two ways you can
participate:-

1. You can write an essay about your life in Habbo. Full details will
be provided to help you prepare the essay.
or
2. You and up to four friends (5 habbos maximum) can come and meet
P0nyta1l in one of her rooms and share your experiences of Habbo.
Groups can be all female, all male or mixed it is up to you.
Just email P0nyta1l (Dr Janet Ward, Hanken School of Economics) at
[email protected] for more details. I look forward to hearing from
you. I am particularly keen for more females to take part.

Thank you,

Dr. Janet Ward

The idea of writing an essay on Habbo sounds both hilarious and ridiculous to me, but I suppose there are some addicts out there who would find this assignment a great use of time.

If I lived in Britain and was going to be paid for it I might make an effort. Otherwise, no.

I thought it could be something to do with pedophiles or cyber sex (oops) when she wanted more girls to take part but her interests seem to be online marketing in virtual games so im confused on exactly what this is for

Doesn't really take up that much time, plus I don't play anymore much so it's nice to actually write down my experiences for someone to read.

got a reply back with 3 documents, one with essay instructions, one for you to fill out to give permissions, and one to describe the study itself.

Pick a quiet time when you have 2 or 3 hours to spare and start writing your essay. Ideally try to write it all in one go.

good luck with that!

Seems difficult to put your entire Habbo history into words but i'll try to remember most things

Also, are we writing it fact after fact after fact or is it more story-like where we note our thoughts and opinions too?

Also, are we writing it fact after fact after fact or is it more story-like where we note our thoughts and opinions too?

Here is the guidance for the essay
BA Project Instructions for My life in Habbo, extended essay APRIL 2014

This essay is about your life in Habbo from the time you first heard about HABBO to today. There are no right or wrong answers. It is your experiences both good and bad over the years. Please give as much detail as possible so the longer the essay the better.

You may also want to consider if Habbo is separate from the rest of your life or if friends from where you live are involved or not. Equally, if there have been times when you participated less in Habbo what was the reason and what made you return.

This information is confidential. Only my colleague carrying out the same research in Finland and I will read this. We are looking for broad themes across the interviews and essays we read to understand the different participation styles. We also want our questionnaire to reflect how Habbo’s speak.

Please read the notes below before writing your essay. We hope this will help you. If you have, any further queries just email [email protected].

PREPARING YOUR EXTENDED ESSAY ABOUT YOUR LIFE IN HABBO.

Memory is one of the issues in trying to remember events that may have happened over an extended period. These activities are designed to aid your recall and so help you write a more detailed essay. Good luck.

1. List in date order the key events that have happened related to Habbo over the years to form a timeline.

2. Do you have any screenshots, videos etc of these events, your Habbo’s over the years, the rooms, or other items you have created in world?

3. If, so how do these fit into the timeline?

4. Once you have prepared this. I would leave it a day or so before writing the essay. You may find other events start coming back to mind. It may help to either add these to the timeline or just jot them down to add later so you do not forget them.

5. Pick a quiet time when you have 2 or 3 hours to spare and start writing your essay. Ideally try to write it all in one go.

6. It would be useful if you could give a short paragraph about yourself at the beginning including; who you are, where you live, family/guardian and friends and what you do at present work/college/school. Please note we will give you a different name e.g. George, age, UK. So you cannot be identified.

7. You may want to leave it a day in case other memories come back. You can then fill these in before emailing the file to me with the completed research permission form.

Format – Please use a Word file with a clear typeface such Aerial or Times Roman 12 and double spaced. Thanks for your help!

As it's titled an "essay" just listing facts wouldn't really fit with the theme but as not everybody is expected to be a top class essayist then I suppose just do what you feel is best.

so we got asked loads of questions about

- why we play
- what we like about it
- what we don't like about it
- what keeps us here

it was nice to talk about how we play habbo, and not just discussing what needs to change. i'm not sure how much of it will be useful as it did turn into more of a rant about habbo pros and cons. was expecting it to be more about internet chat rooms in general and not get into specific topics like the mute, the dice ban, etc.

i really urge you to get in touch with janet, especially if you think your view is pointless or you don't know habbo enough to talk about it. i'm worried as normal these research groups will just be habbo veterans and not getting any point of view from newer habbo players, not that we're helping by advertising it on here, a site that is pretty exclusive to experienced players.

if you do want to take part, please don't take this as a chance to just request changes to habbo. this is independant research and she is not in cahoots with habbo, she can't do much to help your request. be as truthful as possible, if you really dislike habbo then don't stop yourself from complaining, but this could hinder the report, and same goes for if you try to ignore negative aspects on habbo.

if you love habbo enough to sign on to here, then i'm sure the idea of this is actually quite exciting. just do it!

well it went on for over an hour and we discussed a lot of things. I won't go into detail because I don't want to ruin the experience for others but it was certainly interesting and enlightening. Everybody has a voice and most go unheard or are drowned out by those with louder voices or megaphones in the forms of strong ties to community or its staff. This is an opportunity for all habbos to get an equal say, to vent, and to show that habbo isn't *all* bad.

strongly recommend that anybody wanting to discuss habbo forms a group of their own and shoots her an email.
