Subway's halal only menu in 185 stores

Around 200 branches of Subway have cut ham and bacon from their menus, serving halal meat in response to calls from their Muslim customers.

The sandwich chain said 'following a strong demand from our Muslim customers', 185 stores in the UK and Ireland have introduced the meat, which is prepared under strict Islamic rules.

Surely they should do both? I'm all for more places doing Halal meat and I understand they will need their own sections and things done properly, but you can't just get rid of other meat, not fair for bacon lovers.

there are millions of subways. in the big city centres i see 1 down every street

on the subway storefinder they have a halal store option its obviously just to appeal and target specifically muslim populations not force halal meat down british throats :L

There's only three Subways down here so I would hope that they've not changed either, it seems highly unlikely tbf. Although, even if they did the two in town are quite close so I wouldn't mind the extra walk, just a bit of an inconvenience. I only ever get turkey and ham so I would be devastated :( I hate the chicken from there, tastes far too rubbery for my liking.

When those hotel owners refuse to let gay owners stay at their hotel that's perfectly acceptable, but when subway voluntarily decides to serve only halal meat in select stores that's suddenly not acceptable, and 'to hell' with us non Muslims.

I never said you advocated a law stepping in, but when those gay customers were rejected from staying there you seemed to bask in the joy of the free market, yet when subway decides to serve only a specific type of meat in select stores you're suddenly not happy.

I will always defend the free market, even when I do not agree with the decision of the company (as in this case and the other B&B case).

Defending the right of companies to do what they want doesn't mean I agree with what they are doing. I am not fond of smoking which I regard as stupid, and I have never even tried a cigarette - but I wouldn't dream of using the force of the law to impose my beliefs on pub owners/bars/clubs.

I find the actions of Subway divisive, discriminatory and the total opposite to the values of this country. But they still have a right to be like that.

There should most definitely be a choice. A lot of places only do halal already in London and there are a lot of KFC places which only sell halal meat as well and unless you're in the know the only thing telling you about the meat is generally a tiny sticker behind the counter saying 'Halal meat served here'. I've stopped eating in places which serve halal meat as I don't believe in what they do, my own little protest.

Seems a bit pointless. Either have both in one single store or just hope that they have two stores close to each other. Never understood halal meat, it just seems too tedious to be a problem. It wouldn't surprise me it isn't actually halal meat they're using anyway - just using normal stuff and re-label it.

Eradicating any choice is pretty silly. If this was a country where the majority and the culture asks for Halal then maybe, but they shouldn't remove food from any store, really. Yes, they have the choice to remove it but it sets a dodgy precedent, especially if no alternatives are being offered.

Subway do have an aggressive marketing tactic and want to be the largest sandwich/lunch shop in the UK so really they're just branching out to all demographics. It's clever, but ruins another demographic at the same time.

Not sure, can you buy it in ordinary supermarkets? I think you can get kosher in supermarkets but never seen Halal so maybe you're right. That said, it all probably comes from the same depo/distribution centre :P

How do you find out if the store is Halal only then? I used the Store Loacator, but I got no where on that as none displayed as Halal when I'm sure there should be.
