I keep hearing negative things about it and that it's having a lot of problems, alongside some positive things.

Should I download windows 8.1 or not? Is it worth downloading?

I have it, but some of the things annoy me on it. Some of the things that worked with 8 don't work with 8.1 (for me anyway). For example, the default image viewer doesn't work until about 20 minutes after I've clicked it. On my browser I can't see sizes of files such as avatars and signatures either.

I have encountered a total of zero problems with it but then again I don't use the crappy app-like screen I use the desktop and stuff so there might be an issue with the random tiles

I didn't have any problems with it at first but recently it's been slowing down when I do certain things, the main one is searching with the start menu, it lags for ages - no idea why. I have the same problem with the default image viewer, it doesn't open for ages then says something along the lines of program timed out.

You should be able to still see this on images:

Unless you are using the built in IE on the start screen.

Yes you should x Although I have raged many times (which is actually down to my crappy laptop make instead) it is quite good.

Windows 9 is expected to be out in a year/just under though, so if you have the patience to wait for that then do.

I see that, but on size it always comes up as not available, it didn't used to.

YesYesYesYesYes

You'll be forced to eventually anyway but yeah, it's made a massive improvement on the speed of my system. It's a great update equal to a service pack, should deffo go for it.

I just finished installing windows 8.1 and said it's complete, but nothing is happening now? It said something would pop up as an agreement thing and so on, nothing has though? :(

Help? Anyone? :(.

8.1 Much better if you're a desktop user as you dont have to swipe to do ******* everything. there are deffo differences between 8 and 8.1

Windows 8.1 has just had an update which is being called windows 8.1 update 1 by many. This update while small has added lots of new features aimed at desktop/non touch screen users, so it might be worth upgrading.

Basically all the metro apps now have buttons on the top so you can minimise and close - some users found it hard to close apps by dragging them if using a mouse so an x makes it a lot easier. Metro apps are also in the taskbar now so you can see what's running and get to them easier. You can also pin them to the taskbar. Also there are power buttons on the main metro start screen for shutting down and restarting and a search button. A future update looks like it will bring the start menu back, slightly changed.

Also jordan when you open any metro apps you now have a minimize and X button at the very top (as you would find on any browser, any file directory etc.)

Only annoying thing about 8.1 Update 1 is they changed the default media player back to WMP from whatever metro **** it was. This would be fine except I'd already changed it to VLC :/

I upgraded to 8.1 a few weeks ago, haven't looked back, Once you get used to it, its fine.

Start menu is coming back in an update in August anyway.

Interestingly you'll also be able to run metro apps from the desktop which I think will lead more people to use them - imagine an app you use on your windows phone and tablet now also working straight from your desktop. This is currently possible now with software but its good to see microsoft are adding it to windows in general.

There's also rumours that windows 9 or another future windows version will be cloud based

You already can, was added in the last update I did, it pinned the store to my menu annoyingly.

No as in you'll actually be able to run the metro apps as desktop apps. You can pin them to the start menu now but when you access them you access them in metro mode.

But when you open them they open in metro mode. You can't have metro apps physically on the desktop with other apps e.g. like this program lets you do http://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/

However apparently they will bring this to windows in general soon so you could have a metro app in a window on the desktop so you could see it and all your desktop apps

My new laptop is windows 8.1, don't have any problem with it so far so no reason to hate it, but more ways to personalise your PC with apps and etc which i never use
