The Olympic Games could make a dramatic return to London in 2016 under plans being looked into by the organiser’s official body.

According to reports, the International Olympics Committee has held secret talks to discuss the possibility of London taking over hosting the event from Rio.

The IOC are concerned about the lack of progress Rio has made in its planning for the event, with sections of the Brazilian media calling its management ‘shambolic’.

A senior IOC official told reporters this week that Rio’s planning is ‘the worst I’ve ever seen’ while urgent work on speeding up progress has begun.

But alternatives, if Rio can’t deliver, are being looked into, with London apparently being sounded out as a back-up.

The Evening Standard reports a top level source saying a return to London ‘is unlikely’ but would ‘be the logical thing to do’.

London organisers are said to have already been approached and have given the green light to taking on the project, with a link up with Glasgow, which hosts the Commonwealth Games in July, another possible option.

Would you be happy if the Olympics came back to London, or would you dread the public transport being congested again?

I wouldn't care it makes no difference to me as I'm not from England.

I don't think we actually will to be honest. So don't get your hopes up, although I really did enjoy the London 2012 Olympics for sure.

World Cup and Olympics should never come to Brazil. I'd like to see London Olympics again, coloured wimbledon and maybe Roger Federer Gold Medal ;)

Weren't the developments in London pretty shoddy until really late notice as well tho? not expecting it to return, the queen has prob paid the committee off to get a bit more use out of the stadium before it's knocked down in favour of a council estate

Didn't West Ham or Tottenham win the bid for the stadium? I want this to happen but I can see things that could get in the way.

I'd love for the olympics to come back, but it's so unlikely. Saying that, it wouldn't be the first time it was hosted in London as a kind of last minute back up iirc.

Problem is it will cost a lot to get the venues and so back into the way they were to host an Olympics which makes this very unlikely. I'm sure Rio will hopefully get there stuff sorted and host a great Olympics.

The London 2012 Olympics was amazing, but hosting it in London again so soon just wouldn't be the same not to mention they wouldn't have had as much time to prepare. I doubt it'll happen, but I wouldn't mind if it did :P.

Seems unlikely, most of the park has been altered in such a way that changing it back to an Olympic Park would be impossible or at the very least mean forcing businesses and residents out of the area which probably have a stake in the land (the village where the athletes live being one).

Last I heard the rumours were that the World Cup was coming here, not the Olympics as one of the stadiums for the football isn't complete and it needs to be by the end of the month. But that would be crazy seeing as we lack the infrastructure and logistics to host a football tournament. That may have been breaking news that turned out false or was meant to be about the Olympics but someone thought football.

It seems like it would be cheaper just to send more people to people the Rio Stadiums and Centres for the Olympics, rather than cut the losses and ask another nation to re-build or re-erect infrastructure. It seems more likely to just appear in Rio with Brazil being forced to invest more in getting the work done sooner.

I can't remember tbh but found this:

At a comparable planning stage in 2004 Athens had done 40 per cent of preparations on infrastructure, stadiums and so on. London had done 60 per cent. Brazil has done 10 per cent — and they have just two years left.

Yep, that's right!

While highly unusual, a move of the Games to London would not, in fact, be unprecedented. The 1908 Summer Olympics were originally scheduled to take place in Rome, Italy, but were then held in London after an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906 had put Italy under severe financial strain.

I'd like to see the Olympics returned permanently back to their true home in Greece.

That said, i'm just not someone who gets excited in the slightest by people running around a track, kicking a ball or throwing things. :P

I don't think Rio is going to be finished on time if I'm honest.

Would be nice if London had them again.
