The FCC has voted in favour for a rule change to Net Neutrality rules which would allow ISPs to charge websites extra for better bandwidth.
Net Neutrality has meant that all data has been treat equally without any discrimination but a landmark case challenged this when Comcast and Verizon were able to win the right to charge netflix for priority on their networks.
After this case, The FCC has been debating allowing ISPs to do this on a large scale as long as it is done fairly. Plans include a possible second fast late for specific sites. The ISPs claim that high usage website cost them a lot and so owners should pay extra to help the ISPs manage large amount of data requests. However most believe this will damage what has been an open internet and may also put small companies at risk who may not be able to afford extra fees.
A consultation period is now in progress till july 15th. I really hope they can be perswaded to change their mind as I think this could have far more damaging consequences. Also if sites do have to pay extra there's a high change users will partly pay for these extra costs.
