If somebody has been murdered how much time do you think the murderer should receive?
I've always wanted to hear people's opinions on this - so personally I think they should get 30 years if they've killed a single person and any above a lifetime sentence, what about you guys?
If they have taken a life from the community, then a life is what they should give up. A life for a life. So 30years doesn't quite cut it for me. I'd say their entire life behind bars. I think government, especially in Canada are too lenient for this. I think a life sentence now is like 25years? I forget, but it's not a life sentence. Haha

I agree but if they have a good reason to get out then they should be allowed a shorter sentence if not lifetime. Even one year is hard going so I'd still say around 30 years but agreed 25 years is maybe too short.

I think the charge of murder should carry the sentence of death with it if convicted.

That's pretty interesting. I still think you should be allowed out at some point just when you get the trust back of people and stuff. Being locked up forever is just annoying and boring and yeah they should've thought about that before they killed the person but maybe they had a good enough reason and if they've killed more than one person obviously should be locked away forever but in my personal view of this I think if someone has murdered one person and feel very emotional about it etc and do not have a criminal record or anything before than they should be allowed a shorter sentence because that's fair. If you don't do anything in life and just one crime happens you surely deserve a second chance in the end. I understand life is sacred but unless you're absolutely insane or high or just a total ***** nobody would kill somebody without a proper good reason.

who the **** cares if they find it "boring and annoying". They killed someone therefore they deserve it

It depends on the reasoning behind the murder. Was it just a random act? An act of unplanned revenge? An act of planned revenge? An act of self defense? An act of....
If it's just a random murder with no reasoning behind it, they should get life in prison until they die or be executed. If say your wife was cheating on you and you killed the person she was cheating with, an unplanned revenge act, they shouldn't get executed. I can understand that, if it's just in the moment of a situation. If it's a planned revenge act though, they should get life in prison or executed.
Self defense should be no time at all really, even if the other person didn't have a weapon. If they were breaking into your house or whatever, you just do what you have to do. It's in the moment, you don't really know what you're doing.
If it's accidental, the fault of the person that was killed, then no time whatsoever. If it was a careless accident, such as drink-driving, a good twenty years or so should do it. It may be an accident, but they're 100% to blame.
I can't be bothered thinking of anymore types of murder/manslaughter/whatever!

I know. The police will just accuse them even if it was an accident - if you used self defense / accident against it just so you could cover your tracks they'd probably lock you up for 30 years anyway not believing your sob story but personally I think they should view cases before locking people up for example the fact that some people may have actually been in an accident and not deliberately intended to kill this perosn.

Prison's soul reason isn't just about punishment. It is about rehabilitation. Even after 30 years in prison, if they're not adequately rehabilitated whats to say they wont just go and commit the crime again, and again until they're caught. If not they'll take their own life as they're not prepared for life outside of their 6ft by 6ft cell. You can't just lock someone up for the rest of their life. It goes against human rights but personally if a crime is that severe where you feel they should never step foot inside a community, just sanction them to a death penalty. Simple as. Don't mistake murder for manslaughter though. If someone kills somebody accidently, it wouldn't be fair for them to go to prison for the rest of their life.

I'd release someone if I see improvements but it'd take a while I suppose and yeah manslaughter should give the penalty of 10-20 years in my opinion unless it was self defence which caused to kill the person.
I heard someone punched someone and they died? Did anyone know how long they got?

Between 0 years and indefinite detainment. People who commit non-premeditated murder are unlikely to re-offend.

Technically you can receive a full acquittal for murder if it was in self-defence. It wouldn't be manslaughter unless you used excessive, unreasonable force. The law comes from a son who shot dead his father who was going to kill his mother and was in the middle of committing it.

Ooh, that's really interesting.
I actually never knew where that law came from.

It's a really interesting area to look into. I recommend it just for interest :) Self-defence isn't necessarily about defence of yourself but others too, including property as well so it's quite a big topic!

There's been accidents where people have thrown one punch, the person ends up dead and they're locked up for life that is one of the main reasons I have created this topic to basically question should THAT be fair?
