I'm not sure if it would be against terms posting a link to this so I thought I'd just mentioned it instead minus the link but someone has discovered a hack that gives updates to XP.
Basically it involves changing some registry settings to make windows update think the version of XP is one of the embedded versions, Windows Embedded POSReady 2009, which will get updates until 2019. Apparently this version has gotten the same updates as the main versions of XP so should work for xp in general although there's always a risk of something going wrong or even Microsoft finding a way of stopping this from happening. I wouldn't recommend it myself as windows 7/8 is far more secure but thought I'd share the news
