Joan Rivers rushed to hospital 'after she stopped breathing'

Tart-tongued comedienne Joan Rivers "in stable condition" after she reportedly stopped breathing during throat surgery on her vocal cords in New York

Joan Rivers was undergoing throat surgery for her vocal chords in New York when she reportedly stopped breathing

Joan Rivers, the actress and comedienne renowned for her withering verbal put-downs, has been rushed to hospital in New York after she stopped breathing while undergoing throat surgery at a Manhattan clinic, sources told US media.

Rivers, 81, was said on Thursday afternoon to be in a "stable condition" by a spokesman for E!, the entertainment channel for which she works.

She was reportedly taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition on Thursday morning after she stopped breathing during surgery on her vocal cords at an endoscopy clinic on the Upper East Side.

Rivers suffered cardiac arrest, according to some reports, and her daughter Melissa was believed to be on her way to New York to be at her mother’s bedside.

Rivers is no stranger to controversy and this summer she walked out of a live CNN interview in protest at the questions as she was publicising her new memoir, “Diary of a Mad Diva”.

She is the current co-host of “Fashion Police” on the E! television channel and also helps hosts CNN’s New Year coverage from Times Square.

The tart-tongued comedienne has often been criticised for her making insensitive jokes. Last year, she was criticised by some Jewish groups for making jokes about Holocaust. "This is the way I remind people about the Holocaust,” Rivers, who is Jewish, replied. “I do it through humour.”

And during this month’s Gaza conflict, she caused fresh controversy when she told a website that that Palestinian civilians "deserve to be dead", but she later insisted her words had been taken out of context.

OMG.

I conform perfectly to the gay stereotype when it comes to worshipping Joan Rivers, she's such a great personality I love her. I don't like many comedians, but she's one I do like. She's absolutely amazing for 81 (yes, I know she's had surgery but more so in how active she is).

Hope she's alright, apparently she's gone from critical to stable which is good.

Thoughts?

Are you autistic or something? Don't you understand the concept of dark comedy? It's what she thrives on.

True, she believes Israel has a right to exist which is a heinous crime in your crazy worldview. But she's a comedian mate, understand that.

Not a fan, and her Zionist views aren't part of her comedy so that's not a valid defence for agreeing with genocidal attacks. Nonetheless I hope her a swift recovery because unlike certain people I don't wish any damage on people whose views differ to mine

I liked her about 10 years ago but I don't find her that interesting any more. She seems to have a really misinformed view on reality these days, saying controversial things and actually meaning them, rather than doing it as part of a comedy act. She's hasn't really been a comedienne for a while, and is more a show host than anything else.

Apparently doctors are going to take her out of the coma this weekend to test whether she's had any brain damage, it really doesn't look the best considering damage can occur within just a few minutes of oxygen being starved from the brain. Really really really hope she pulls through, can't wait to hear her jokes about it all. :( :( :( the QUEEN of america.

Been following this religiously all weekend, and she got worse this weekend being put on life support, but this looks like some good news in the last half an hour as doctors have started bringing her around out of the medically induced coma now.

Joan Rivers on life support as daughter Melissa 'keeps fingers crossed' about mother’s condition

The feisty funny lady was being brought out of a medically-induced coma Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital as her only child waited with bated breath on how she will respond. “The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday,” a source close to the family told the Daily News. “There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair.”

Refusing to buckle to her worst fears, Joan Rivers’ daughter is keeping her “fingers crossed” that a miracle will bring the 81-year-old comedic legend back from the brink of death.

Melissa Rivers, 46, said her mother has received an outpouring of prayers and encouragement from friends and admirers around the world.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed,” Melissa said in a statement Sunday.

She said her mom, who is in serious condition, was “resting comfortably” and asked that “everyone keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”

While she tried to publicly sound upbeat, “Melissa is apparently totally hysterical and is at a loss for what to do,” the source told The News.

“They won’t know the extent of the damage until Tuesday at the earliest,” the source said of Rivers’ condition.

Sources have told The News that Rivers would not want to live unless she could enjoy “a full and active life. ... (She) would never want to be a burden on anyone.”

The host of E!’s “Fashion Police” went into cardiac and respiratory arrest Thursday morning while undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords at a private clinic on the Upper East Side.

Doctors subsequently put the Emmy-winner in a medically-induced coma to stabilize her vital signs. As of Sunday, she was breathing with the help of a life-support machine.

Rivers’ best friend, Margie Stern, stopped by the hospital to visit, but refused to comment when she left.

Another close friend, Jay Redack, Rivers’ creative collaborator, said he was left stunned by the comedian’s sudden health setback.

Redack, who also visited Rivers on Sunday, said he had gone to dinner with her on Wednesday night and that they had discussed the minor throat procedure she about to undergo.

He said Rivers, who performed a comic routine Wednesday night at the Laurie Beechman Theater near Times Square, showed no signs of a pending medical crisis.

“We talked about life, Melissa, boyfriends, tennis lessons, and talked about her act,” said Redack — who co-wrote “Rabbit Test,” the 1978 movie Rivers directed.

“Everything was going well for her,” Redack said. “Her career was good. She loves ‘Fashion Police.’”

Redack said that after 40 years of friendship, he knows Rivers better than most.

“You know how polarizing she could be, but people don’t realized what a fantastic lady she is, the charities that she supports, without fanfare, without people knowing,” Redack said. “She is a great person.”

Pledged to myself that if she makes it, i'll be going to one of her UK shows once she's back on the road.

Joan Rivers with daughter Melissa and grandson Cooper

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon." - Melissa Rivers

I am absolutely gutted. I don't usually care for celebrities, but she was one I really did care for: she was an amazingly hard worker - never stopped - was incredibly and genuinely kind to all those who met her unlike many celebrities, and she had amazing wit and talent that allowed her career to span for 50 years which is remarkable when it comes to comedy which is something the vile haters (who she wouldn't give a **** about in typical Joan fashion) don't understand.

She's an absolutely star and if i'm honest - I think she'd be glad she went out with a bang rather than suffer or get older and lose her work which is what she said she always dreaded and did not want. RIP the Queen of Comedy. :(

I think my favourite video though is when she got high, she's the crazy grandma we all secretly want. :P

Sad to see another legend go. I wasn't so keen on her work within the last couple of years and she began showing her age making really dodgy comments but she was a loving mother, grandmother and compassionate towards many. The "BAFTAs Remembers" is going to be heartbreaking.
