View Full Version : How do you install a RAM stick into a PC?

Sorry guys again, but i'm gonna buy an extra 8GB of RAM for my PC sometime in the next few weeks. I understand that you open the case up, and click the Stick into one of the two remaining slots (I've only got 2 slots for RAM), but do you have to program the extra 8GB in the BIOS or anything? or is it just as easy as inserting the extra 8GB and then you're ready to go?

Many Thanks :D

It's as easy as inserting the ram, it'll auto recognise and be there.

So just inserting the 8GB and clicking it into place recognizes the extra 8GB and there is nothing more to be done?

Only reason i'm asking is because the man at the PC shop who I bought my custom PC off is wanting to charge me £75 for an extra 8GB whereas ive found the exact 8GB i'm using (a Crucial one) for £59.99 and I thought i'd rather save myself £15 here and do it myself.

Yes.

Is it a 8GB stick or 2x4GB pack? best make sure.

Soon as you stick it in, it'll register the extra 8GB and be usable.

Just want to double check with you that its just 1 stick rather than 2.

Thank you:)

RAM is easy to install, crucial can be a bit overpriced on their website though, but yeah it will recognize it and if you go into your system specs it will be there.

Thanks. Is there anywhere you would suggest I find that exact memory stick from somewhere a bit cheaper? Only reason im doing it my self is that the guy who normally sorts out my PC's and stuff wanted £75 to do it - thought I may aswell save a few quid and do it myself if its that easy.

Just look up DDR3 PC3-12800 and they should all be compatible.

Doing anything inside a PC really is that easy.

So it doesn't have to be a Crucial one? My other one is crucial though?

oh they are crucial, sorry

It doesn't matter, can be any brand in the world.

Obviously crucial and the likes are higher rated brands than some other cheaper ones.

Posts merging is annoying I never get the message/update

The second is SO-DIMM (so laptops etc), the first one is fine although personally I'd try to find lower timings (11 is pretty high)

How about that one? Will that fit? Just thinking cos if I order off the internet, it'd be harder for me to return, and it costs me £5 delivery (not even next day), but whereas if I buy it from PC World (which is only a 5 minute drive from me) I can easily return it if broken/faulty.
