Knowing my luck since i'm new to college I'll get checked for my ID Badge all the time, the lanyard is horrible it's just a plain blackone :(

Do people usually get checked for their ID badges at college/uni? The only time I ever had to use mine was access to the library.
anybody that wears a lanyard is a pretentious freak. if you're asked for your id pull it from your wallet or pocket!

Literally never in all my college life been asked for my ID. Can use it for the library but they let you just quote your student number for that anyway

When I was at college the first year lanyards were not necessary. Because of safety and all that crap lanyards were introduced for our cards which allowed entry.
A-level/BTEC students had red with the college logo, university students had green, lecturers had blue and I can't remember what colour visitors had.

Im thinking about just leaving it in my pocket and pulling it out, lanyards would get on my nerves tbh with it moving every time you walk

I have a lanyard with the Students' Union logo on it which is what I should wear when I'm in there to "identify me as a staff member". But at sixth form only the pretentious kids wore them...

the first couple of days most people wore their lanyards but after a while most people stopped and i never saw anyone around college wearing it so don't worry
anyway i always used my student number instead of swiping my card for anything like printing and library

We were made to wear our college ID and lanyard but eventually people just didn't bother. I know for when I go to university we need them to swipe on the door for lecturers/seminars and to get into areas of the university for students, e.g parts of the student association. Will probably just keep mine in my pocket with my wallet for easy access.

I don't use one anymore, I just keep my ID in my wallet. The one I used to use was just one that the university provided.

When I was at college I had a white one with my college name on it and we had to wear it as they checked for it every time we entered the building. Even if we had it in our pockets and took it out to show them they use to tell us to put in on and they wouldn't let us go any further with out it being around our necks

It was a rule in our college that you had to wear it at all times.

I had a card in college however I never used it and was never asked for it to be seen and so i just kept it in my wallet for the 2 years whilst i was there. I'm at university now and we were given a cheap lanyard that my i.d card just clicked into, I keep mine on a lanyard as we require it to get into most buildings on campus, classrooms and lecture theaters, we also have to scan it when inside a lecture theater to "sign-in" on the register and to use printers (although due to being on an IT course this didn't happen much..). A lot of people kept theirs in their wallets as the scanners were strong and so they could just hold their wallet up to the scanners. It's up to you on what you do, if you think a lanyard is going to annoy you then keep it in a purse, pocket or easy to find place inside your bag.

If River Island do a student discount (I don't shop there so I wouldn't know) then they may take it. The problem is some places now only take NUS Extra Cards, these only cost £12 for a year (I got mine for free for 3 years with a TSB Student Account) and you can use them in loads of places (I swear i'm not a representative lol).
Back to your college/uni provided card just ask wherever you shop because you never know what money you can save!!!
Edit: just googled "River Island Student Discount" and found this statement "We don't offer a permanent student discount online or in store, however we often hold special discount events aimed at students. We'll advertise these events on the River Island website, email newsletter, our Style Insider blog and the various social networks." on their website: http://www.riverisland.com/how-can-we-help/frequently-asked-questions/student-discount/do-you-offer-a-student-discount

Had a quick look on ebay and these are like the one i was given at uni (mine was black) http://tinyurl.com/qblke59
There are other ones but most seem like they just have a clip at end and no place for a card, unless you have a pouch or card holder of some sort already then they bit useless :P
it's tucked behind my phone case

We don't do student discount lol, but we do student discount events every so often, typical 4 times a year and yes your uni or student card is fine, no need for a NUS card.

My college didn't start using lanyards until 2011 when I was in my second year, I think they've stopped doing them now as I don't think my sister got one. We were meant to wear them, but no one did. Mine just had my college name on.
I have to wear one for work though too and that just has Home Bargains on, not very fancy :P.
These are perfect. Easy to pull out and swipe it, then just release and no worry about putting it back into ur wallet or a short lanyard.

My sixth form you don't need to have a lanyard just have your ID on you in case of checks, which have never happened :L The Blackpool & Fylde College which is the other local college they have to wear their lanyards at all time due to high security risks, its a pretty rough college if you dont have your lanyard then you're kicked out
I have one for work and it's free of charge. Branded the lot.
A lanyard is a lanyard. Any will do the trick.
