While this is obviously not new news in the UK, as the service was shut down last year, MSN Messenger is finally being shut down in China, closing the service completely after its 15 year run. The closure has tied with Microsoft's (MSN's owner) purchase of Skype in 2012, with users being forced to use Skype by the 31st October. MSN users however will be able to use their account via Skype or merge an existing skype account with their msn account, meaning they will still have access to the same contacts. Each user will also be given free credit.

While I used to use MSN Messenger a lot I'm kind of glad myself it is gone (although it has been gone for us for a while anyways). It never would have made sense really having two instant messaging programs by the same company, aka Microsoft, so actually integrating the two together into one application was the best move in my opinion. However a lot of people including myself have fond memories of using it but then again it wasn't the same in its final years.

It's about time! Skype is so much better, I can't even imagine going back to msn now.

I miss msn tbh you always had much more customisability with the emoticons and text which skype has failed to catch up on tbf, but skypes always been better for vc so yeah oh well RIP MSN.

I think MSN was always great, seems to be must more customability(?) with your screen names etc and was more user friendly

MSN was great, but I'd feel sorry for all the General Managers having to be in like 15 different staff chats on there... It would drive me insane.

/alertsoff really does help. But yeah I like Skype a hell of a lot more than MSN but it was good at the time.

I think Skype is much better! MSN was only more enjoyable because how customisable it was, and thank god there's no nudge option is Skype. *shudders*

Awesome back in the day, had some funny **** go down on MSN.
It's a shame really. Skype is good, but it doesn't feel like MSN used too.

I do agree that MSN Messenger was a lot more simple - it looked and felt simple and it worked but as I said, integration had to happen. It's a shame they couldn't have tried to get a load of messenger features into Skype although there is always Messenger Plus from the people behind windows live/msn messenger plus. Messenger Plus
