PLEASE WAIT FOR THE POLL!!

From all the Scottish independence debate threads, it seems that it's easier for English people to see themselves as British first than it is for the Scottish to do so. I personally have always seen myself as Scottish before i'm British which is nothing to do with nationalism but rather because I see the countries as separate and I've never felt attached to the rest of Britain. I wondered whether England find it easier because they're the bigger country? so I thought id do a poll, dw undertaker i don't believe this poll can speak for the rest ;)

Tbh am bit confused between the whole Ireland and Britain thing so vote whatever

I'm English and see myself as British first.

Interestingly, the part of the UK that considers themselves the most British is Northern Ireland.

I suppose there should have been a 'I'm Irish and see myself as Northern Irish' option, considering the good Friday agreement and all that :P

I'm all so confused about which part of Ireland, if any, see themselves as British. hopefully someone can explain. I just placed them all together so I guess voting yourself as irish first can be any sort of irish? Was just hoping to see who places themselves as British before their separate country, if u can call them separate.

ireland aren't a part of britain or the UK, northern ireland is part of the UK but not britain

irish and irish first obv as there is no other logical choice (if you're from the republic)

I hate people that aren't from England that refer to themselves as British first when introducing themselves to foreigners. I'm looking at you, everybody from Northern Ireland. There appears to be some stigma attached to identifying as any derivative of Irish up North. It just confuses people rlly! I'm British , I guess. Don't rlly discuss my nationality that much to care.

I was born in London and have spent my life between the two countries. Me having an Australian accent doesn't help either.

It doesn't surprise me at all. :P

When the Union was formed, England made many efforts as the larger partner to absolve English nationality more so than Scottish nationality (we'll leave Ireland and Wales out as they're different cases), so that is why the British identity is stronger in England as it was England that sought to prevent alienation to the Scottish Britons. A lot of people don't know for example, but during the Georgian periods and the early Victorian period you'll often see England marked on maps or referred to in books as 'Southern Britain' and Scotland as 'Northern Britain'.

Myself? British first, English a distant second. Although I rather regard being English on the same level as being a Lancastrian for example.

I would say British mainly because that's correct, like when you put it on forms and stuff.

But when I'm on holiday if someone asks where I'm from I say England, but my dad says the UK.

I'm proud to be English, but I'm also proud to be British, so either is good for me :)

Im born and bred in Northern Ireland and I consider myself 100% British. Given the fact aswell that the sacrifice that men and women from here made for the UK as a whole during both wars demonstrates our ties to the mainland. Just a pity a lot of people dont understand the difference between us and the republic!

English and English first, as people from scotland see themselves as scottish first mainly. Looks like it's only some english who say they're british.
