View Full Version : What would you rather do?

A) Be given £10,000 for free
B) Be allowed to donate £1,000,000 to any charity of your choice for free

So, ten thousand and one million. That's a big difference, so it makes it harder for those who would normally say 'I'd take the money and give half of it to charity' -- although you could still do that, it's your 10k and your choice, just nowhere near as much as a million.

If you'd donate a million to charity, what charity would it be? :P

i mean right now i would defo take 10k, but in the future if i'm earning quite a bit i might opt for the million. for now i'm a charitable case anyway, i deserve it.

i was going to pick option b an the charity would be crohn's and colitis uk
however, i was told that only like %10 or 20 of donations to a charity actually goes to them... idk if this is true
but option a

The £10,000.

If I were able to give to multiple charities (aka very small ones which I favour) then I would maybe reconsider.

yeah you'd be allowed that lol, so basically if you chose 2 charities they'd get 500k each

probably should've said that, oh well

See the kind of charities I favour would be even smaller than that, most likely. :P

Give a million to a charity. Obviously one that doesn't get much funding and would benefit a lot of ppl. Why take 10k which is less than I can earn with ease when so many can benefit instead :s

option b if I get to create the charity, **** giving money to a charity and have them spend it on absolute **** aka people like cancer research

Because it's instant, would benefit your life, and would be added to anything you can earn.

As long as none of it goes to you whatsoever or benefits you and goes fully to charitable costs, then you could make your own charity with option b, yeah :P

Can't believe so many people would take the 10k...

£10k is absolutely nothing.. won't even pay for one year at University.

Would obviously do the £1m and give it to the obvious.

I'm sure there's some scams out there!

You cannot legally run set up a charity if you, as a trustee, intend to take money from it (salary or otherwise).

Obviously there will be cons out there, but they would not be a legitimate charity :P

(Although, technically speaking, you could receive a salary - if, for example, you were the Director, but then on that basis it would need to be agreed by the other trustees etc).

take the 10k

unless I knew the money would SERIOUSLY help the charity, like if someone said we need a million and cancer will 100% be cured, then i'd give them it.

there's no such thing as an instant cure without the steps to reach it, so even if it doesn't give a cure, I'm sure it'd help a lot lol

Whilst I know there are certain charities that seem to have a plug hole for money, there are THOUSANDS that would SERIOUSLY benefit from £1,000,000...

I would take the 10,000 and set up my own charity. I've actually kinda wanted to do that for a while now but I'm not too sure what cause I'd even do it for sigh.

The first post and poll implies you have to actually give the 1m to a charity and not use it to set up your own but I do agree it needs clarification haha.

A later post stated you could use it to set up your own :)

The costs of setting up a charity are very little, anyway. A lot of paperwork and time, but in terms of cost, very little.

Depends at what age you are talking.

I personally look at £10k and think "yeah, would be a nice boost to my bank account, but really, it isn't going to go that far".

Spent £450 so far without even stepping foot in my Uni yet, just about says how much £10k is :P

I guess, I look at it and think, that could get me a nice car or something that would be useful. But you're right, 10k isn't a lot to some people, but others it would be a great boost.

And woah lmao, yeah I guess so.

I would take the 10k at this moment in my life. Maybe when I graduate, have a family, have a good job I would say charity but for now, £10k pls

Samantha

I would give the million to charity.

The 10k might be nice, but I've been living without it, I don't exactly need it right there and then when on the other hand, there may be families there not coping. Their children could be dying and the 1million could be used to either make them more comfortable, or help them in their life. 10k I can earn after 2 years at work with some besides for myself instead of taking it instantly and it could be gone just as quick.

I rarely spend money, the most I'll spend is when I'd like a new games console or laptop, holidays etc. so to have it sit in my bank doing nothing when it could have been so much more and help many people wouldn't be fair in my opinion.

i think brain dead forum users should be banned to be fair

I don't know why I am bothering to reply, but generalising every charity in the way you have just done is moronic at best - very, very few charities (as a percentage) 'get enough', and the vast majority of charities essentially fill the whole that the government has left open through failing to meet the needs of its citizens.

Clearly you have seen little information. I will speak to you how you deserve to be spoken to; arrogant views deserve arrogant responses.

Using Cancer Research is not exactly a fair way to judge charities, and - by the looks of it - that is exactly what one has done.
