'What We Did on Our Holiday'

Divorce, depression and death. Not three things you'd expect to see in your average comedy, yet Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin (directors) manages to pull it off spectacularly and still put a lighthearted spin on the whole story.

Inspired by the BBC hit 'Outnumbered', Doug and Abi McLeod (played by David Tennant and Rosamund Pike) are traveling to Scotland with their three children to celebrate Doug's father, Gordie (Billy Connolly)'s birthday.. What Gordie doesn't know is Doug and Abi are getting a divorce. And the children aren't all that good at keeping secrets! Joined by a neat freak, money-grabbing Uncle (Ben Miller) and his secretly depressed wife (Amelia Bullmore), what could possibly go wrong? Watch chaos (including Child Protection workers, a Viking funeral, and the poshest birthday party I've ever seen) ensue as the weekend's events unfold!

'What We Did on Our Holiday' is guaranteed a fantastic feel-good night in for all; with semi-improvised script from the children, the whole film was cleverly put together, being both funny and incredibly sad with perfect timing. And, despite being primarily a comedy, it tackled some very difficult issues- I can tell you I never expected to see three children sort out a funeral all by themselves!

'What We Did on Our Holiday' is one of a very few films that show children in a realistic light: mad, uncontrollable, but always good at heart. It's also wonderful to see a film that doesn't try to sugarcoat divorce, terminal illness, or any of the other difficult issues tackled. Yet still they manage to slip in plenty of hilarious moments and quirky characters!

I'd thoroughly recommend this as a film you can take just about anyone to go and see. It's not a painful romcom so your Dad can't complain, it's innocent enough for your Mum, any younger siblings will love the jokes from the two younger children.. I'd recommend this film to everyone I know!

You might also want to make it 4 filled in stars with 5 on it or something.

As that's just 4 stars, out of 5 or out of 10?
