Can you pause/stop it during 'normal times' for the majority of users? (i.e. 9am-10pm or something).

I'm sure quite a few people use new posts to search the forum, and without it people just won't bother, with 7+ million posts, it's going to take like 3-4 days to rebuild, so may as well just run it at night and leave it off during day so people can actually use new posts.

If you rebuild the index, does it skip ones that are already indexed? I would assume so, so realistically this is a possibility?

New posts works for me. Tapatalk masterrace.

If it's not possible just use activity stream

Activity stream is useless overall as it's a huge effort to see any posts if there's multiple replies in one thread.

and does it?

Kyle

Yes "timeline" feature here loads posts in same manner as new posts. No repeat threads like activity stream.

I don't suppose he gave a reason?

Can't see a downside to stopping it during the day, except that it may take a few extra nights as it wont be running during the day.

Been told it would break. Can't go into further details at the moment.

mm, pretty sure you can stop it at any point then resume from that point (if done on the web as url shows the current position iirc).

Not sure if you can simply pause/resume on cli though.

We are doing it on the server itself. I'll have more info later anyway.

Well suddenly i feel superior for having used activity stream ever since it came out lmao :¬: I agree that pausing it might actually not be a bad idea for the new posts users, but hey if recursions says no i guess not :P

Doing it through the CLI because Recursion hasn't used Habbox outside of the CLI in about 2 years.

Stopping/Starting is a bad idea because Recursion will forget to restart it.

scottish
28-11-2014, 06:36 PM
Can you stop/pause it on CLI? I know web you can just copy the URL but idk about CLI.

Can poke him every night to restart it or show ghana how to.

We were moving to DigitalOcean in May when this database issue first came up. I think Recursion is a big fed up at this point.

Why is the lack of new posts that big of a deal. Can you not just browse the forum without it until it's back?

Because I'm sure about 80% of the forum use new posts to see what's new and post from that.

So removing that is obviously going to impact the amount of posts.

It's not a permanent removal so just have some patience.

I know it's not permanent but it'll last several more days most likely and it's effort to even use the forum without it.

I used to alternate between new posts and activity stream anyway, so it's not that big of a deal, it deals feel a bit odd, but it's not a huge difference.

The problem I'm facing, and probably a few are on the forum is that if you're on the mobile skin you can't just scroll through the forum for the new posts. You have to go in forums or even sub forums to even begin looking at it. Yeah you can see if there are new posts in a forum, but the icon pretty much looks the same colour if there aren't too.

It's annoying without New Posts, it's not just because I want to post on the forum, as I have been doing a bit, but it's making it near impossible in my department. We have pages on all (ex) management and we can't complete them unless we go through page after page of announcements which isn't good if a member of staff doesn't know if they've had a name change or when they were staff from and to.

I know it's a short term problem, but it's not just a simple scroll down the forum/use activity stream for some people.

What is New Posts is it that button that says What's New?

I use the activity stream when the forum is quiet to spy out new posts but other than that I just scroll through the forum. I'm only interested in a very few subforums so activity stream is usually just full of posts I don't care about.

Depending on the skin you use, there's actually a 'New Posts' button, but yeah, it's 'What's New' too

Personally, the thought of the amount of extra effort that's needed to find what I want without new posts, I've almost stopped entirely.

I assume it'll still be down for a while considering the timescale with other issues.

Activity stream is awful to use imo and is usually spammed with spam threads.

Yeah I much preferred Activity Stream cause if multiple people have had a convo in the thread and their replies are relatively short (in a short space of time) i can just scroll down and see what they were saying without going into the thread

it also looks nicer with peoples avatars IMO though before activity stream i did just tend to go through subforums and not new posts i always disliked new posts on habbox ???????
