View Full Version : What would you do if someone broke into your house?

Be realistic, we aren't all superman.

To be honest I don't think my first priority would be to ring the police, they can't do anything if they're 20mins away.

Someone tried to break into my house last year, thankfully we were in and they got scared off. It's happening again, when it comes up to Christmas, people try break into houses. Last night there was footprints all down the door when we got home late and tonight someone hammered down the door and ran off (they usually do this to make sure no-one is home). It can't be kids messing as it's far too aggressive to be a little fun. I haven't informed the police yet as they're somewhat useless unless something actually happens. I've put a knife on the kitchen table as I don't have any hard objects handy besides my head, im not trying to be a hard man as i obv wouldn't use it, its more so to scare the thief away.

What would you do in the event of a robbery in your house whilst you were in?

Our house got robbed the day before we moved into it. We had bought a new fridge and a huge tv for it the day before and we think the delivery men came back later and broke in. Or it was our neighbours.

We checked the damage (which was a broken window) and then looked at what had been stolen (the tv) and then rang the police.

Cry probably. Hahahah. No idea what I would do really. Doubt phoning the police would be the first thing I did.

when i was 7 we were on a holiday in spain and our apartment got broken into. they were terrible burglars though 'cause they missed my mam's rly expensive camera that was on the table right next to her purse and phone and left with a beach bad (having mistaken it for a handbag). was pretty scary though cause we were all in the apartment fast asleep when it happened and the beach bag was in my parents' room so creepy to think that someone had been in there while they were asleep :P

we found the bag a couple of apartments down in the morning with everything still in after they realised that all the bag had in it was sunscreen and a towel lmao.

had a break in when i was at a client's house at work too. it was about midday and we were in the kitchen and we heard the front door open so i looked through the kitchen door to see two men walking passed the living room towards the back room so i kinda had no choice but to lock both of us in the living room and phone the police who hung up thinking it was a prank call :(. so had to phone my supervisor (who just so happens to be my mam so she was worried sick lolol) and she got the police over. felt pretty useless since they were like twice my height so there was nothing else i could have done and the lady i was helping just kept suggesting that i throw her hoist at them??? lmao

just realised i wrote loads oops

Probably go at them with something heavy. My mum is 5ft3 and useless and my grandma has fibrosis of the lung (can't even walk for more than 5 minutes without fainting these days) and osteoporosis so she'd be in real danger and tbh would probably have had a heart attack as they came through the door.

I'm 5ft9 and there's plenty of heavy stuff I could use. Wouldn't actually want to hurt them but if they're just idiots wanting to nick a telly or something hopefully they'd decide to run away rather than stay around and fight. And all my neighbours know each other round here so I'd be screaming the place down as well, hopefully whilst my mum rang the police.

Edit: oh yh and we have a dog who is a little bit smaller than a cat and the friendliest thing on the planet but she gets really excited if someone's at the door and will bark her head off. She sounds like a terrier (she's not actually a terrier tho) when she's barking and whoever was breaking in would hopefully know that a terrier bite is bloody painful.

I'd call the police first.

I wouldn't be alone in my house so my family and I would probably go down, try to chase the person out or keep them there until the police arrived. In the case that the robber had a weapon, you'd have to do what you have to do. Grab the nearest thing and hit them, stab them, whatever if you feel you are in fear of your own life. Or you could always run out if you fear they may use it on you. Whatever one is the quickest and safest one to do, fight or run.

You don't know that they won't use that weapon on you (if they had one), so if you have to stab someone in fear of your own life, even if it lead to their death (which is unlikely but not impossible) then it's worth it and you haven't done anything wrong. In the case that they didn't have a weapon, probably chase them out or somehow keep them there until the police get there if it's safe to do so.

If I was alone though, it'd probably happen differently...

isn't it a law requirement to send out the police even if they think it's a prank call and especially to not hang up lol?

terrible police right there

yh Lewis; my neighbour used to keep an ice axe under her bed to use as a weapon against burglars but one of our other neighbours is a police officer and said if she gets it out it's more than likely the burglar might try and take it off her and use it against her. So she doesnt use it anymore.

scream for my mum lmao
if they broke in using front door my mum n stepdads bedroom is downstairs anyway so the dogs would bark n theyd wake up n see anyway
would love to hit someone with a saucepan though

if i was alone err god knows lmao think id acc die if i was alone and it happened

we havent had our house broken into before tho only our mums car and it wasnt even broken into lmao it was my fault for accidentally leaving the door open
but my mum keeps her make up in a purse and so they took the purse haha thats it tho

i think if i was alone id just shut my door n jump onto the extension roof n call the police since the one for our area is literally round the corner n so if the burgular thought theyre alone they prob woudnt rush as much as if someone was in the house if tht makes sense
i dont really have much logic i dont think lmao
ivej ust realised thats prob rly stupid but i dont want to die ok would rather they take our tv and computers whatev n we buy new ones lmao ;ll i am like 5'2 and useless
they would probably be able to step on me let alon stabbing or whatever ;lllll

Try and look for money with them.

Joke.
I don't know what I'd do. If I was home, I'd probably hide because I'm afraid of everything...
If I was out, I'd call the police when I got back.

Lol, well it depends, how many and if they have a gun or something. If it was someone without a gun I'll get a stick and beat the **** out of him XD
Anyway here in my country if someone brakes into your house they probably are armed

ERR Probably call the police, I might be feeling strong enough to take them on but if they had a gun then no bye.

Call the police, get the metal bat and prepare myself while being quiet.
If they are armed, I will pretend to be asleep as a TV and whatever else they may find isn't worth my life.

If someone broke into my house I would more than likely call the police as my number one priority.
I would then go check on my family members and tell them to lock themselves in the room. I would then probably try to arm myself with some sort of weapon and shout and make myself clear that I know somebody is in and I have alerted the police. Hopefully it will spook them. If not my dog would probably chase after them! (Although I think dogs hurting humans is bad just saying)

However since I have never been in such a situation I can't really say that's what I'd fully do but I suppose that would be my intentions!

Sorry to hear your house was broken into I could only imagine how horrible it is. There's things you can get that make people seem like you're in etc or CCTV I was watching a program about it the other day!

Barricade myself in somewhere and call the police I guess, I'm such a wimp and get really scared thinking about this kind of thing :(

People haven't ever broken into my house fingers crossed, but if someone was to try i'd hope I/we could scare them off. Me and my dad are both stocky and over 6ft so we could probably intimidate them enough to run, if that doesn't work a baseball bat to the side of the knee will at least put them to the ground until the police turn up probably 40 minutes late, as they do

If the dog didn't get to them for some reason i'd pick up one of the barbells from my bedroom and attack them with it.

I'd be more worried about the damage the vehicle caused to my house

Grab something I could use as a weapon firstly (probably the pen knife in my draw) then call the police if possible. I'd only use the weapon in self-defence so that I minimise my risk of prosecution in court.

well firstly I live off the main road in my whole town so it's not likely to ever happen. secondly there's like a ridiculous amount of dogs in my house so if anything dodgy happened in the night they'd start going mad anyway so yh. i sleep with all my valuables anyway lol

prob call police I don't have heavy things in my room literally clothes and bags ;l
