Kerry Smith quits as UKIP parliamentary candidatehttp://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/79719000/jpg/_79719573_kerrysmith_pa.jpg
Kerry Smith, UKIP Candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock has resigned after making offensive homophobic and racist remarks in a phone call. His comments referred to 'poofters', 'chigwell peasants' and 'Chinky bird'.
Kerry Smith has resigned as a UKIP prospective parliamentary candidate after apologising for offensive remarks he made in a phone call.
He was selected to fight the South Basildon and East Thurrock seat after ex-Tory MP Neil Hamilton pulled out.
In a recording obtained by the Mail On Sunday (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2872943/Farage-s-golden-boy-s-rant-pooftahs-Chigwell-Peasants-Chinky-bird-Astonishing-leaked-phone-calls-expose-outbursts-Ukip-man-sent-replace-Neil-Hamilton.html), Mr Smith made offensive remarks about gay people, other UKIP members and Chigwell in Essex.
He later issued a "wholehearted and unreserved apology".
UKIP MEP Steven Woolfe rejected suggestions that Mr Smith's exit and other recent controversies involving Mr Hamilton and the party's general secretary Roger Bird showed UKIP was in turmoil, saying it had dealt with problems "really rapidly".
UKIP hopes to make a serious challenge for the South Basildon and East Thurrock seat in the forthcoming general election, in which it is seeking to win a handful of seats and potentially hold the balance of power.
Well, after Farage blames immigrants for his no-show at a UKIP event, what does Smith blame his outburst on? Alcohol? Immigrants? The Conservatives? Nope, Smith blames being on painkillers! Joke of a candidate for what is showing itself up as a joke of a party, lately.

Glad Farage has defended this guys comments on LBC - it's currently headlining over Sky News in an attempt to make something out of it. I use words like this and as long as they're not made out of malice and in a PRIVATE conversation (apparently the poof comment was praising a fellow gay Ukip candidate) then who the hell cares. Chinky and poofter, I mean really. Anyone who claims they've never used words like that is a liar.
Refreshing to have someone standing up to this phoney outrage culture that the media peddle 24/7.

I'm afraid I never ever communicate with anyone who uses 'chinky' and 'poofter' in passing conversation. Not out of objection, just nobody says that in 'passing conversation'...

Do you not consider it a pathetic excuse to blame painkillers? Almost as embarrassing as blaming immigrants for missing a meeting.

I agree, he should have just said that they're normal slang words to use and told the media to piss off rather than pander to them.
That's the reaction I would like to see. But glad Farage is defending him anyway.

Just to clarify, is it cool for a politician to be a closet racist, as long as he only expresses these views in private?

Oh so you've never ever used words like that? I have a black mate we used to skit and I myself got called ****/terrorist ETC in school because I have darker skin, I get called ****** nowadays by my mates because i'm gay, I have a Sikh mate I call a terrorist, muslim and everything else under the sun, and a mate from Czech Republic we all rip for being an Eastern European...... if you have mates and your a lad it's called banter. A normal friendship group does that anyway.
This guy, as Farage said, grew up on a council estate and is working class... and we're not shocked or horrified by words like these because they're just normal, with or without malice included. If you want to be horrified by these words then you can be, but the rest of us will move on and stop biting our fingers and pretending to be outraged over what is a complete non-issue. He didn't even say these words in a derogatory context lmao, the poofter comment was in praise of a fellow gay candidate. Phoney phoney outrage.

Well imagine if he did admit to saying words like that. He'd be crucified by the media just like this guy is being.
Which is sad because in this country there's this increasing culture of fake outrage over a few comments or words being spoken. It's pathetic & dangerous.

Lovely avoidance of the question. You'd be a top politician. I asked whether it is ok to be a closet racist, as you state in your post above (that I have helpfully quoted), that he can say whatever he wants if he did it in private. So you're belief is that I am welcome to despise all of a certain race or group of people, as long as I don't say that I have those views to the media; personally I wouldn't want any individual with closet extreme views near he Commons, and I REFUSE to believe you would either.
You rather like throwing 'phoney outrage' around at the moment, don't you? Maybe we should add that to your dictionary of terms, alongside the 'waycist' people. Like Farage, I don't refer to 'chinky', similarly I don't refer to '****' (bet that is filtered!) or any other terms. I don't refer to 'poofters' either. Not because I necessarily have anything against 'poofter' as a term, but it just sounds incredibly chavvy, and therefore out of my vocabulary.
Finally, 'lad' culture is pathetic, and 'banter' is another word for being a total ****. Who the hell are you to state what a 'normal' friendship group is or does? It really is lovely that you have a multi-cultural group of friends, just to make you feel comfortable, let me point out that you are evidently not alone in that and there are certain terms I can use when with them that I couldn't use to other people. Let me start with 'monkey'.

See, this is why I say waycist waycist all the time because that is exactly what the likes of you parrot. You've now said that he despises people of a certain race or sexuality, yet I see no evidence of this: indeed the phone call was apparently in PRAISE of a gay candidate and talking about getting a Chinese meal. Where is the malice or hatred there? Tell me.

So what is your point? That you are a beacon of virtue, do you want a medal to go with it?
I use slang words like that, especially around mates or in ironic situations. If you don't use words like that then I would say you are highly unusual especially for a lad as usually lads when with friends absolutely rip one another, but don't give me the faked outrage over comments like poofter or chinky - especially when they're not even used with any malice towards anyone.

You do use words to rip one another? Then you're just like everyone else. Good.
So again, why are you pretending to be so upset over poofter and chinky? I am really puzzled. :S

No, I didn't claim his comments were filled with hatred. I was commenting on the fact that you are implying it is FINE for someone to genuinely have those views, as long as they only say them to friends behind a closed door. I am disputing that, how difficult is it for you to understand?

You honestly say 'lets get a chinky' instead of 'let's get a Chinese'? I don't believe you. You are ignoring my big point; I am not claiming outrage - I don't think he should have made the comments, sure, but my big point is questioning you on whether it is fine for someone to hold these views, as long as they express them behind closed doors. I am questioning you, not Smith.
Although, once again, I cannot help but laugh at anyone who accuses medication of being the reasoning for the comments.

Unfortunately, my use of the language is in an entirely different cultural context. I certainly wouldn't want up to someone with brown skin in the UK and consider the term 'monkey' as acceptable.
The point is, Dan, that I am commenting on YOUR post, not Smith. You keep missing that bit.

I have no idea where that has come from, we're discussing whether it is alright or not for someone to use words like that and I said yes it is perfectly fine as well as normal, and more so it is even more fine to use them in private. Not everybody talks or should be made to talk to their friends as though they're delivering a speech in the House of Lords.

Um, people can hold and say whatever views they want if you ask me. It's not up to me what views people hold/should be allowed to say. As for what I myself would say, I wouldn't say chinky to describe a chinese meal (but then i'm from a different part of the country) but do use words that are considered far worse. We all use words like this guy did (unless you live in Islington) so let's stop pretending to be outraged over non-issues.
And you keep saying whether it is fine to hold 'these views' (referring to Smith) but what views exactly are you disputing? All he used was slang.

Using derogatory language about people you don't know is not the same as making fun of your friends using it, which is in itself more poking fun at the negative connotations associated with those words than agreeing with their general use. There is a massive difference between (for example) referring to a black friend who is in on the joke as "the help", and saying it in reference to a member of the public. Context is important
