View Full Version : [Film] 52 Films in 2015 Challenge Thread
The Don
15-12-2014, 09:54 PM
If enough people are up for it I thought we could set up a film challenge for 2015. Between now and December 31st we can come up with a list of 52 films (one a week) and keep track of progress in this thread. Obviously only worth doing if enough people are up for it but i'm probably going to do it anyway, there's a lot of classics that I haven't ever seen. Just post in here if you're up for it with some suggestions of films for the list. http://www.imdb.com/chart/top is a pretty good list for ideas.

eek I've seen like every film in existence but i would love to revisit some oldies like the lion king. need 1 musical a month to make it all worthwhile.

I was thinking like a specific film each week everybody finds time to watch, but I remember my friend saying his clan watched a film per week in some group thing a bit like that spotify shared playlist app. Obviously wouldn't be required that we watch it together but people could always do that if they want.
Ok Red; hasn't seen Shawshank Redemption so i'm going to put that on the list as a suggestion. Feel free to copy the list and add films to it, then we can shortlist it after.

guys, we can just see how many people actually want to participate and then divide 52 by however many people there are. Then each person gets to choose that many films each etc
so say 10 of us take part, we get to pick 5.2 films each, round that down to 5 and then the group can decide on the remaining 2 together.

I kind of expected to see Saving Private Ryan in the list for some reason. I've never actually seen it so I'm not actually suggesting it. I did actually want to suggest something but I forgot what it was yolo
Added it!
Might have just been easier to go through the IMDB top movies and do the first 52 :P
But anyway.. has Harry Brown been suggested? That's a brilliant film.
Haha you're probably right, but sometimes the imdb top movies are all films which people have already heard of, this way we get some obscure films popping up. Added Harry Brown as well.
Big Fish, Sleepy Hollow, Forrest Gump, The Silence Of The Lambs, The Butterfly Effect
Dunno can't think of any others :') Sorry if these have been suggested already :L
Already had Silence of the Lambs, will add the others now. Good suggestions :)

The Fifth Estate. Don't even know why I'm suggesting cos I couldn't stand that film. No wait I was enjoying the plot but Benedict Cumberbatch's accent was making me feel a little queasy...
Side Effects (might be Side Effect idk). I went through the whole thing not being particularly impressed but then I got to the end and realised I'd actually enjoyed it quite a lot.
Four Lions? Never seen it, but I've been told by countless people it's good.
Bait. Shark film lol
The Cake Eaters. Never seen this film but it's apparently about a teenager with Friedreich's Ataxia and how it affects not only the sufferer but everyone around them. Thought it would be interesting to see after @buttons (http://www.habboxforum.com/member.php?u=42203);'s push for Ataxia UK. I know it's got Kristen Stewart in but most reviews seem to say she offered an extremely good performance and was nothing like Bella Swan in the Twilight saga.
The Double (2013, not 2011)
Young Victoria. Probably crap in the minds of most habboxforum members but I loved this film.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Pianist (please omg)
The Pretty One. Romantic Comedy but the ideas the film was based on really got me thinking too.
I know the list is quite long but I thought I'd try and offer some variety. I'm not really very good at comedy though. I can only do TV show comedy.
Oh yeah also idk if any of these have been suggested before sorry

well ive seen trailers and it seems to be about a relationship with her teacher or something, so not really anything to do with her disorder i dont think but pretty cool to see it in a film
there's a japanese drama called 1 litre of tears based on a real life girls battle with spinocerebellar ataxia. honestly made me cry in EVERY episode and this was before we'd even heard of ataxia

oh really
one of the most useful reviews i read was
This 2007 indie movie would have vanished without trace were it not for the fact that the new it girl du jour, Kristen Stewart, is in it. She is featured as Georgia, a young girl with Friedreich's Ataxia, a rare disease for which there is currently no cure. The main symptoms are those of apparently being drunk, ie one slurs, stumbles and falls, and tragically the illness spells an early death and zero social life.
Set in rural America, the story centres around Georgia's determination to live a proper life and get a decent bite from life's apple. To this end, she press-gangs a local boy, Beagle, into sleeping with her.
But 'The Cake Eaters' is so much more than a young romance. To me, in its own modest, quiet way, the film was an insight into the struggles, triumphs and mysteries of life itself.
Also, K Stew's performance was stunning. At first, especially seeing her lacklustre stint in 'New moon' and 'Eclipse', she appeared almost vapid, and not trying. However, her quiet and compelling performance here grows on you. For that matter, so do her gorgeous, elfin looks.
By the way: in spite of the title, there is no reference to the eating of cakes.

Also is it possible to organise the voting so we HAVE to have at least one film of every genre? Even if most ppl hate romance for example, 1 film of 52 won't kill anyone. I just don't want to be stuck with all 52 films being horror, thriller or drama. The reason i wanna take part is so i can see a variety of films i wouldn't consider watching on my own.

I had the remake with Robert De Niro in mind. Didn't even realise there was an earlier one if i'm honest! I would do both but I think there should be variance since there's only 52 films so don't really want to put two of the same film in.

None of them are really obscure, and they're all popular films that are in the list basically, so there's no need.
and the 26 you've generated are probably some of the most popular/known films?
stick them all in the vote, and watch based on # of votes.

I approve of them being randomly selected. Means we won't just end up seeing films we've all seen a million times *cough* shawshank *cough*.

I've never seen it though and its 1 of them where it seems so long I need an excuse like this to watch it lmao

Most popular/known? Face Off, Twelve Monkeys, Amelie, Young Victoria, Battle Royale, Identity, 12 Angry Men, The Cake Eaters, Weekend at Bernie’s are all pretty obscure films from the randomly generated ones. The whole point of the challenge is to get people watching films they otherwise wouldn't and if the list is composed entirely of films which have been popularly selected due to them being favourites then obviously foreign films such as Amelie, Musicals like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, obscure like The Cake Eaters, and old films like 12 Angry Men won't be selected. Half being randomly selected adds variance to the choices and prevents the list from being just the 52 most popular films.

we will be watching shawshank most likely, and you can't randomly generate films from a HabboxForum film thread, they're all movies you've seen multiple times.
Face off, The Departed, Terminator, No Country for Old Men, Taxi Driver, Apollo 13, TRHPS, Battle Royale, Casino, Se7en, The boy in Striped Pyjamas, Silver Linings Playbook, Silence of the Lambs, FROZEN??????
they're probably the movies i've watched the most in the list.. and the rest seem crap
i don't mind watching a crap movie because people have actually voted it the most popular and want to watch it, but what's the point in having some crap movie if people don't even want to watch it.
I stick by my decision, every weeks film should be voted for, not random generated.
I think just play it by ear, obviously nearer to the end of the year if people have given up and we are in a smaller group we could make changes?
p.s everyone go vote my fave film *+*+

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to enjoy all 52 of the films regardless of which method is used to select them. Clearly people do want to watch it since somebody had to have voted for it for the film to have ended up on the shortlist in order for it to get randomly selected. If we did the 52 most popular then we'd get a generic list which would likely exclude multiple genres. If a majority of people are unhappy with the final list once they've all been selected then obviously i'd be up for changing it. But I think the variance in genre added to the list from the randomly selected films is better than having the 52 most popular. What's the point of everybody watching mostly films they've already seen in this challenge? Seems pointless.

unless every single person on habbox likes the same genre then I doubt it.
The most popular 52 is going to vary completely. If you allowed us to vote for 52 options then I could see the point of them all being generic ones most people have seen before, but it's not allowing you to vote 52 so there's going to be all sorts of different titles in the final list.
That's down to users voting what they want to see rather than what they've already seen 10x.

akeam has done a fair method
only one of mine (actually idk if i recc'd battle royale) got into the final and that was cause it was randomly selected, none of my other ones will be, even if they are good cause no one will bother to look up ones they haven't seen. randomly selecting means people get a chance to watch a film they might never have bothered to watch.
if u don't want to watch a particular film then watch another one that week, end of

so wait what are u doing with the 52 then akeam, taking the top 26 voted out of our 4 votes?

just saying 12 angry men is an amazing film and i love it!!
stick with random generated, the entire point of this for me is that i want to be given a film to watch that i wouldn't ever have sat down and watched myself, not gonna happen if we vote on all 52

Unless there are anymore votes between now and midnight, 24 films will be added to the final list from the voting thread and 17 films will have to be shortened down to 2 in another vote.
Empired; The Double is the one you added to the shortlist in this thread so it's whichever one you meant (I assume 2013 from what you've wrote)

Will be posted as soon as the 52 films are selected. Most likely midnight tomorrow (we'll just have 5 days for the first week OR last week instead of 7).

I'm up for that although obviously it's only optional. Hopefully a few others will be too, not really sure how we can watch the films together if they're not on netflix or available for streaming.
will we just post thoughts of the film of the week here??? or are you going to do actual threads for the films or whatever

Make a list, randomly sort them then do it depending on week
so for example tomorrow night publish a list of
Week 1. xx
Week 2. xx
Week 3. xx
..
Week 52. xx
and just do it corresponding to weeks on this http://www.epochconverter.com/date-and-time/weeknumbers-by-year.php?year=2015
so maybe our first week = Week 02, then out last week = Week 53
then post a thread each week
[52 Films] Week 1 - Film Title Here Discussion

Yeah i'll do one thread a week. I'm not sure whether it would be better for the film to be drawn weekly? So it's kept as sort of a surprise, or the list can be drawn from the start. The order will be selected using a random number generator with the 52 films in alphabetical order, so 12 Angry Men = 1, Young Victoria = 52 etc

idk i'd say a full list would be better than week by week imho and RNG the order.
