A healthcare worker who has just returned from West Africa has been diagnosed with Ebola and is being treated in hospital in Glasgow.
The woman, who arrived from Sierra Leone on Sunday night, is in isolation at Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital.
All possible contacts with the case are being investigated, including on flights to Scotland via Heathrow.
The woman will be transferred to specialist high level isolation in London as soon as possible.

I thought they were doing checks at Heathrow airport? Obviously not doing a good job

...and so it begins.

Was probably their usual 'checks' - only those 'suspected' of having it.

oh dear, hopefully they actually quarantine her properly...

This country doesn't check anything incoming (hence the million+ illegal immigrants here) only the law abiding British subjects are checked who are felt up, passports swiped by mean clipped-haired women in passport security along with strigent checks against people bringing back booze & ciggies.

Controlling our borders and preventing dangerous diseases over making sure the public are ripped off with our alcohol+cigarette prices? Never!

Whenever I fly back in all they seem interested in is booze and cigs, with random checks in the suitcases as you walk out.

Our border force is a farce, you only have to watch UK Border Force to realise that. It's slapstick. I once watched, with my jaw dropping open, an illegal immigrant being stopped and questioned (who claimed he was like 16 but was in his late 30s) so guess what they did? Sure they have to check his claims etc, but they went and put him in....... a house in central London. A HOUSE. At the end of the programme it was revealed (surprise surprise) that he had disappeared that very night. Morons of the highest level, zero faith in these clowns.

Never had my bag checked for booze and cigs, despite always having a generous selection. Getting through Heathrow was an absolute breeze (no staff member needed; electronic passport). Meanwhile, there are long queues for both foreigners and the rest of the Brits.

Border security is an absolute farce; but not because of illegals lol

There's an estimated 1 million+ illegals in this country. That could be the dictionary definition of a farce.

In terms of the Ebola people coming in, hey you can't check everything when it comes to diseases but what I don't understand is the selfishness of all these people going to these countries (Doctors especially who are supposed to be educated) who then come back and don't subject themselves to quarantine: not only threatening their direct relatives and friends, but their neighbourhood and nation as a whole. Quarantine should be compulsory from these areas.

Yes, I mean obviously illegals are all landing at airports and sneaking past the border officials when their backs are turned...

Also, where are you getting your figures from? Not even the DM claims it to be 1m+!

You're right, the doctors should be quarantined to check for ebola. I agree, with you there. But branding people selfish for such a thing? Get real, these people are trying to help make a positive change in the world - please, don't brand them as selfish.

What the hell how have you even gone onto immigration Dan.

The worker who is infected it is a British, legal citizen who went over to the country to try and help people over there with the disease. Yes it's a shame the disease wasn't picked up on before she got back into the UK but branding her as selfish (despite the fact she risked a lot to help out other people who were infected...) is beyond absurd.

Another thread ruined again by completely unrelated topics being brought up.

This is the first thing you have said in a very long, long time that I have actually agreed with.

Should be compulsory for all people returning from infected areas to be quarantined.

London School of Economics (although doesn't include all) suggests upwards towards 800,000, although MigrationWatch disputes this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_in_the_United_Kingdom In any case, the fact we do not know how many hundreds of thousands are here shows what a farce it is.

On the second part, which the topic is about, why are they not selfish? Selfish idiots and I have zero respect for them. It is one thing to go off to the Third World, but to bring that disease back knowingly knowing the risks and putting yourself in contact with family members, loved ones, friends, innocent people on trains and the country as a whole is selfish. Infact, if you ask me the Doctors and volunteers who go over there and catch it but don't subject themselves to quarantine back here who then pass it onto others are pretty much responsible for any deaths resulting from spreading it.

It's one thing not knowing the risks and not knowing you have it, it's another knowing the risks/knowing you could have it and STILL putting others at risk.

I made a general comment about our border controls (disease, illegals, smuggled goods) that was picked up upon by MyChemicalRomance.

Don't dare try and pin it on me for brownie points.

Not only selfish yes, but incredibly stupid.

If your family member contracted this deadly disease and was laying in the hospital dying after sitting next to this idiot on a plane you'd be singing a different tune. I wouldn't ever ever ever ever dream of putting others at risk like that and i'm not even aware of how infectious this disease is.

So we can conclude that no reputable group of people has put a figure of 1,000,000+ on Illegal Immigrants? Thanks for clearing up that you were lying.

They are not selfish as they are trying to make a positive difference to thousands of peoples lives. Yes, they should be quarantined - so I would call them stupid for not doing so. But selfish? Nope.

They're putting others at risk of death which is probably one of the most selfish things you can do.

"All I did was change the subject to immigration in a paragraph of provable lies and scaremongering! Don't try to pin this on me! It's the fault of anyone who called me out on it!"

The estimates of illegal immigrants in Britain range from 500,000 to the 2m figure. A simple search on Google will show you that. Naturally, being illegal there are no definite figures from the HomeOffice or ONS so that you have to look at the LSE/MigrationWatch other sources.

https://fullfact.org/immigration/illegal_immigrant_arrests_express-32976
http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/briefingPaper/document/166

It is funny though how you say scaremongering and fear when all I did was point out how the government in this country are incapable of controlling our borders, whether it is with people/smuggling or infectious diseases like Ebola. Here's the latest failings (December 2014) from the UK Border Farce..

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/dec/17/migrant-overstayer-figures-swell-watchdog-reveals
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/11298383/Less-than-1-of-overstaying-immigrants-left-Britain-under-flagship-scheme-report-says.html

If the clowns can't keep hundreds of thousands/a million people out, how can they be expected to stop infected people coming in? That's all, so step down from your high horse for once and stop throwing around buzzwords like scaremongering. Those are the facts that our borders are a joke, you lose.

Scary, at least they did the sensible thing and contacted emergency services as soon as they realised they could have had it.

The estimate of the number of illegals in Britain is clearly critical. The Report recognises (page 36) that the consensus among informed observers has been that those who stay beyond the validity of their visas are likely to be a much larger group than those who entered illegally. However, it then estimates that the total number of both categories from 2001-7 at only 50,000 (page 42). This is an absurdly low estimate. In that period approximately 12 million visas had been issued to applicants who, by definition, pose a risk of overstaying (that is why they need a visa). The GLA assume that less than 1 in 200 will overstay despite the widely known fact that there is no check on departures. If, in fact, 1 in 20 overstayed this would approximately double their central estimate to over 1 million.

So they've just pulled the 1 million figure from thin air. Excellent. Hardly definitive enough to plod around the forum spouting if off as fact, why not just admit you were wrong so that this thread isn't derailed any further rather than pathetically trying to worm your way out of the hole you've dug yourself.

Bit late if they contact only when they themselves are showing signs, by then how many people had them come into contact with?

Diseases like that often have days/weeks of incubation periods before any signs are shown, and they're still spreadable then.

I just proved it, and I believe the higher numbers from LSE of 800,000 and MigrationWatch who also have a good track record. Both are much more reliable than the HomeOffice or ONS - both of which have no definite idea either because it is illegals we're talking about. Whatever the officials estimate though, you can at least double that because they're a bunch of crooks. Look at the latest thread I just posted, proved right yet again.

Just as I believed the Euro was heading for disaster, I was right.
Just as I said (before anything in the news) about the grooming gangs in Rotherham, I was right.
Just as I said (before anything in the news) about grooming gangs in other 'enriched' areas, I was right.

Dan even the sources you provided state that it’s almost impossible to accurately say how many illegal immigrants there are here. Your own sources prove that you were wrong to post the one million figure as fact. Just admit you're wrong.

You didn't prove it at all. There's literally no basis for the 1 million figure or for them to assume the 1 in 20 figure as opposed to the 1 in 200 official estimate. Do you even read the sources you provide? That's like me saying the government reportedly spends apparently 300 million on the upkeep of monarchy, but it's probably 10 times that! The government actually spends 3 billion on the monarchy, I just proved it. Absolute nonsense with no reasoning.

Just as I believed the Euro was heading for disaster, I was right.

The Eurozone was established in 1999, changeover 2002. Lol at 9 year old you predicting the eurozone crisis.

Dunno why you've decided to throw around news articles about people already in the country staying too long when 1) no-one's said they haven't and 2) the point of my post was to show how ridiculous your attempt at victimhood was after you completely changed the subject of the entire thread. I don't "lose" because you decide to quote me and not actually respond to anything I've said, that is not how arguments work.
