View Full Version : Dissertation
I am really struggling to even start writing my dissertation and its due in March...:(
To those who are currently writing or have previously written a dissertation.
Any tips? How did you survive and how long did it take you and where did you find the motivation.
Thanks +rep to any good tips!

My motivation was 'Get it done or fail your course', I just did it bit by bit until the last few weeks where you just hammer down and get it done really.
March?! mine's due May luckily
but yeah i need motivation too
To avoid any kind of procrastination I usually set a relatively relaxed regime where I can do whatever I like most of the time but must put at least 2 hours per day aside for reading and note taking. The motivation for a dissertation is that it should be about something you love and it's really the final stepping stone towards your career, so the sooner you get it done the sooner you're going to be poppin babies out of other women
Yep March 13th
Gee thanks Kyle! I have a title
what's your dissertation going to be on?

Just set targets for each week and make sure you tell your supervisor if you have one about it.
I had weekly meetings with my supervisor so I always said I'll do x by next week, so I always met my deadlines
Yeah mine was a bit like Kardan's either do it or fail.
To be honest writing 15,000 words came easily to me. Looking back I waffled on the research massively.
DON'T WAFFLE! Short and precise.

Never done one OP, but from what I hear of them - if you are interested in the subject/topic really really it'll be plain sailing - if you cover it in-depth in differing aspects I think and believe!

Just knuckle down and get it done - it feels great at the end (trust me I stayed up doing majority of it one night and finished it at 7am. I then went to Uni about an hour later and handed it in and slept straight for 10 hours :P)
Another approach is what people have suggested - set yourself goals and if you feel a bit lost do not panic! Speak to someone who can help suggest things :)
Good luck with it though - it is all worth it in the end :)
