View Full Version : What comments have stuck with you?

It's likely that over the years some people will have made comments about you that have always stuck in the back of your brain. The reason I'm thinking of this is because someone said something at work to me today that absolutely killed me inside but I just had to brush it off and act like I was totally fine with it.
So my question is, what things have people said to you/about you that you'll always remember? (Doesn't just have to be bad things!)
I'm not sure if my question is clear so I'll give two examples (they're bad but I can't think up better ones):
-Wow, that colour looks great on you.
-Do you wear your hair like that EVERY day??
Here is a place to vent or boast x

2 negative ones unfortunately:
"You're a bully/not a very nice person". I literally cannot get this out of my head, I've genuinely believed since then I am not actually a nice person. Though it bothers me less now as idrc whether you think I'm nice or not but it still nibbles at me.
"You don't deserve to be unhappy". Might seem nice, but the context it was said in was "there are people dying in Africa, you're not allowed to be unhappy" essentially lol.
Positive ones are just quotes really, some people have said some lovely things to me over the years, but it's always quotes that I recall strongly. Especially this one:
"Because the only thing anyone needs to be special, is to believe that you can be." ~ Lego Movie haha :P

negative stuff obviously sticks more. i've been complimented but nothing that has helped me in times where i'm feeling down.
appearance comments (i can think of negative comments i've had on most parts of my body) + being called 'the weird girl' = long lasting effects even though i haven't heard them for years.... i still feel like that weird girl everywhere i go and that i'm somehow worthless because i'm not 'normal'.
lots more i'm sure but those affect me everyday.

I can't think of any really, negative at least. Either I don't get them or I instantly brush them off as I don't care.
Inseriousity.

I already know im ugly so any negative comments bout my appearance don't make much difference. Only thing that hurts is when I tried to get to the bottom of why my family seem to treat me differently, they said they "sometimes forget I'm even around." That was hurtful.

Physical things like to do with my looks often stick with me positive or negative although must admit I mostly get the latter. Other negatives are when people have a pop about gender related things telling me what I should be or do etc and other positives I guess stuff about my art or designs so stuff I make basically

wow that sounds absolutely terrible mike.
my mother has the knack of making a comment about my weight/appearance/whatever sound positive but is really a dig which can hurt quite a bit.
Do you think we really receive more negative comments than positive ones or do we just notice the negativity more?
Inseriousity.

I've been given a lot of comments - negative and positive. Just gotta try remembering the positive more.

get a plane ticket then get a room
i don't really get negative things said to my face luckily so most the comments i remember are positive
my mum telling me she wishes she'd never had me a few years ago when her mental health was at its worst
my dads new girlfriends comments that I'm 18, so don't need my dad anymore
also probs being asked if i was pregnant in year 10 because im not exactly skinny
positive, someone yesterday said that when I used to be at college with them, they could be having the worst day and I'd be the one person to put a smile on their face
today a girl from my church said that im so strong and she admires me and that she's proud of me because I carry on.
the number one thing that will always stick with me is my grandad saying he was so proud of me to nurses and my dad 2 days before he died, he said it previous to me too so when im feeling down i just think of him saying that. he also said that life is for the living. it meant a lot to me cos my grandad never told me that he loved me, as he was brought up with men don't have emotions, men don't cry etc.
there are probably a few negative like
things like my stepdad saying me n char wrecked his life will probably stick
but most negative i can just brush off now cos hi i dnt care
the one i can think of was a positive and it was a year ago i was wlking home from school and a guy goes to me
"idk how you do it gina?? you are so happy and dont care bout what anyone thinks or what people do" and people commenting saying that am always laughy or happy or smiley or whatev just stuff like that are comments that will stick with me because its stuff i probably dont notice and when people do point it out to me it just gives me more of a reason to maintain it

When I first started secondary school I had to deliver a speech in English. When I was stood at the front of the class someone said 'He has bigger boobs than most girls!' The whole class laughed. It sounds stupid but I've been insecure about my weight ever since. I'm not even that bad and that was 8 years ago.
I get this more from my family than anyone else or maybe only from my family hmm...they're not very nice to me about my weight and it makes me really self conscious because I know I'm not overweight so I'm always paranoid even though I know I'm not "fat" :(
