Hi!

So, this year I have a project to do and it's called "Learning Fair" I know, sounds oh so exciting... It's kind of like a science fair project but it doesn't have to involve science and can be anything as long as it's appropriate and safe. I'm having so much trouble coming up with an idea and I have to have one by Wednesday :( It can be absolutely ANYTHING. Ranging from knitting to building a catapult!

Here is a the description provided: This project gives students a chance to be creative and have the freedom to learn something based on their interests. Each student will choose something new he or she would like to learn to do. The project should be somewhat difficult. It should be hands on. It should take quite a bit of time to complete. The student needs to work on something he or she does not already know and parental and teacher permission has been given. This project needs to be safe and original.

I really can't think of anything :( I really love music. I don't like building things really though.. I REALLY like science and trying to figure things out and such...

So basically.. What do you think would be a good idea for this project? What would you do if you were assigned this project?

My idea: I don't really know! I was thinking of learning a new music instrument like the flute or such!

I did an Extended Project Qualification on dog training last year which sounds exactly like it would fit this Learning Fair thing, although dog training probably isn't up your street :P

I think learning a musical instrument would be quite difficult for this project as it's not really showing any creativity. And how long do you have? Learning a musical instrument to an acceptable level actually takes a long time.

Also, how old are you?

You make the volcano out of paper mache and baking soda is one of the things that makes it 'explode' :P

Actually, I love dog training! I did dog training and entered competitions and my dog god grand champion twice and reserve grand champion. I had to then quit though because my dog had some health problems and couldn't do the next level of training. Do they do 4-H there?

I have till spring break which I believe is the last week in march or beginning of april.. But, I only want to learn the fingerings and how to play a short song :)

Oh cool :) I did a 6000 word report titled something like "The effects of dog training with focus on positive and negative reinforcement" and looked into various dog behaviour specialists and professional trainers. I also took a few videos of my teaching my own dog learning new tricks using positive reinforcement training and compared it with results of negative reinforcement. It was actually really interesting.

I've never heard of 4-H before today but I just googled it and it seems we don't have it in the UK.

If you were to learn the flute, would you teach yourself or would you find a teacher? Only reason is I tried to teach myself the flute but didn't know the right breathing techniques which led to me fainting quite a lot lol... It's actually much easier to make yourself faint playing the flute than it sounds.

Wow! I think we are talking about two different things, 4-H is a lot different than what you did. I was thinking about actual training :P But that is so cool! Sounds really interesting!

And aha, well, I'm going to try to teach myself with a bit of help from my friend. I'm not so much worried about the breathing techniques because I have played flute before... My best friend has 2 flutes and she taught me how to actually make sound come out of it and how to breathe and all of that jazz. (Haha, get it? Jazz? Music? Okay. Lame I know, but I tried :P ) Before when I did play it I just pressed a whole bunch of fingers down just to kind of explore it. Now I'm actually going to try to learn it. I've always wanted to play it so I thought now is the perfect time :P Plus, I play saxophone & clarinet so I have a little bit of background when it comes to how to breathe (although I know it's completely different on flute. :P )

To be honest it's a school project so what ever you pick and what ever grade you get doesn't matter. Just choose anything that interests you and apply some science to it (if it's a science fair). A learning fair would indicate it could be for what ever - so yes learning a new musical instrument and documented how you did it, what you learned, how it differed from other instruments you play etc would be acceptable (I assume).

Personally, I like Ancient History.. So I would learn the basics of Hieroglyphs - some simple transliterations and explanations.. examples etc
