Fiji will remove the union jack from its flag and replace it with a design that symbolises the Pacific country, not former colonial power Britain, the prime minister has said.

Voreqe Bainimarama, a one-time coup leader who was elected in September in Fiji’s first elections in eight years, said the flag had served the country well since independence in 1970 but was now outdated.

“We need to replace the symbols on our existing flag that are out of date and no longer relevant, including some anchored to our colonial past,” he said. “The new flag should reflect Fiji’s position in the world today as a modern and truly independent nation state.”

Fiji’s flag is light blue with the union jack in the top left corner. It also features a shield with the cross of St George and a British lion, along with sugar cane, bananas, a palm tree and a dove of peace. “What does this have to do with us?” Bainimarama asked, saying the images were “honoured symbols of our past, but not our future”.

He said a national competition to design a new flag would be held, with the aim of hoisting it on 11 October, the 45th anniversary of independence.

“We must all have an open mind about the final result, but it should be symbolic of the unity of the nation and instantly recognisable the world over as uniquely and proudly Fijian,” he said.
Flag bearer Cacau Turagabeci carries the Fiji flag at the opening ceremony for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Bainimarama scrapped the Queen’s birthday public holiday in 2012 and also removed the monarch’s head from the country’s currency when he still ruled by military decree.

He pointed out that New Zealand, Australia and Tuvalu were the only other former British colonies that still had the union jack on their national flag.

New Zealand will hold a binding referendum next year on changing its flag, with conservative prime minister John Key favouring a design featuring a silver fern, similar to the one worn by the All Blacks rugby team.

Australia has also faced periodic calls to change its flag, particularly before key events such as the 2000 Olympics.

The flag debate in Australia is closely linked to whether the country should become a republic, an idea rejected in a 1999 referendum.

Not sure why they wouldn't hold a referendum as opposed to outright removing it and it would be amusing if the most voted design was the current design. Anyway, just a small bit of news if anybody is interested.

The coup leaders as far as I know haven't been removed from power and even though they are 'elected' they haven't been accepted back into the international stage... which suggests something stinks about them still: and this is just likely them trying to legitimise their power on the island. In truth, Britain should've moved with the military to reverse the coup when it happened yet we've been too busy meddling in Iraq with America and the Ukraine with the EU forgetting where our real roots are.

I wouldn't look too much into it though until it actually happens as there's been talk by the coup leaders in Fiji for a long time of replacing the flag well as the likes of Jamaica who've been talking about a republic yet the idea has been dropped. The New Zealand flag looking at polling too is likely to remain the same instead of being replaced by the ugly Fern flag which is the sign of a rubgy team. Australia also, the monarchy is as popular as ever as if the flag after former Prime Minister John Howard ordered by law it be displayed at schools and in public at all times.

“What does this have to do with us?” Bainimarama asked, saying the images were “honoured symbols of our past, but not our future”.

I suggest a banana on the flag Mr Bainimarama, for your new banana republic.

Fiji opposition parties on Thursday questioned the government's decision to change the Pacific nation's flag, accusing Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama of acting like a dictator on the issue.

Bainimarama announced this week that the former British colony would scrap the existing flag, which has the Union Jack in the top left corner, and replace it with a design "instantly recognisable" as Fijian.

The main opposition Sodelpa Party said Bainimarama, a one-time military coup leader who won elections last year, had acted without consultation on an issue of national importance.

"In a dictatorship, you can afford to order people around, and this regime has done that many times," party spokesman Peter Waqavonovono told AFP.

He said many people were against changing the flag, which has been used since Fiji gained independence in 1970.

“Although there are segments of our population who are bitter about our British past, we all do not share the same sentiments and therefore cannot be forced to accept their ridiculous laws," he said.

Fiji Labour Party President Lavinia Padarath said the Pacific nation's fledgling parliament was the proper forum to debate such a change.

"Mr. Bainimarama should realise that in a parliamentary democracy issues of national importance should be approved by the house (parliament)," she said.

"The people of Fiji must decide whether they want the flag changed and if so, what the changes should be."

Bainimarama this week said the flag was outdated and a national competition would be held to find a replacement.

He said the aim was to hoist a new banner on October 11 this year, the 45th anniversary of independence.

Bainimarama scrapped the Queen's Birthday public holiday in 2012 and also removed Queen Elizabeth's head from the country's currency when he still ruled by military decree.
