At least eight people have died after a TransAsia Airways plane clipped a bridge and crashed into a river near the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.
Fifty-eight people were onboard the domestic flight, and a number of people were reportedly injured.

Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) broadcast footage of the plane almost submerged in the Keelung river.

Rescue teams are alongside the plane trying to rescue about 30 people still trapped inside.

He was incredibly low to those apartment blocks! I can only image what would've happened if he'd gone into one of those. 30 people still trapped inside and it's almost fully submerged. I could think of nothing worse :(

RIP to those who've died.

Oh wow, that's amazing! Lucky that so few died as it looks like a pretty spectacular crash. How did it happen though?

They declared a Mayday before and claimed an engine flameout, looks like an issue with one of the engines or both and caused them to stall due to very low airspeed. Although a full investigation report should tell us the full details as the plane should be able to still fly on one engine.

Update:

Taiwan Aviation Safety Council today published Flight Data Recorder data from flight ‪#‎GE235‬. It shows that there was an engine flameout on engine #2 about 35 seconds after take off. But according to the Flight Data Recorder data it looks like pilots turned engine #1 off instead, which made that flight #GE235 lost all power and started to loose speed. In order to avoid stall pilots started to descend, made a mayday call and later tried to restart one of the engines. Before they managed to get the engine back the aircraft crashed.

Do we know if the pilots survived? I know I heard a report saying the people at the back of the plane had a much higher chance of surviving than the people towards/at the front of the aircraft (as it went nose first into the river?).
