What is it and what does it do?

basically its like having a messy office where you have to look through a pile of crap to find the bit of paper you need... and then organising all your files into a nice filing cabinet

This is the most brilliant explanation of defragmentation. I will use this myself!

Petrusoxide, visualise Stephen's explanation: when your office is messy it takes you longer to find something, and you may have things laying around that are no longer needed. It also means there is slightly less space for new items.

I keep hearing people saying you should use trim for SSD's but I currently don't have one so don't use it. Is this a kind of defrag meant for SSD's?
