Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users this summer, but Microsoft is also extending its offer to software pirates. "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," says Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows chief, in an interview with Reuters. The move means that thousands, perhaps millions, of machines will get a free copy of Windows 10 even if a license has not been properly acquired.

Not a bad move, considering it was going to be free to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who had a genuine copy anyway. Oh and it should be coming out in the summer time.

Surely that just means that people are more likely to pirate old versions to get the upgrade, rather than buying 10?

Oh well all my licenses are legit anyway so it's fine.

Well if they are on Windows 7 or 8 on un-legit versions then they get the free upgrade anyway. They don't buy Windows 10 unless they don't do it within the 1st year.

It's a good idea, for later releases that will be sold they should allow you to get discounts for each individual machine that has a legit copy of windows by verifying, that'd be cool (in before they already do this and i'm wasting money ;l)

Good move I think. Microsoft really are pushing Windows 10 with a lot of confidence.

In the past they did offer previous Windows cheaper for a X amount of months before jacking it up to the full price. But we don't know what will happen after Windows 10 in terms of pricing.

Isn't their rumours of them moving to an Office 365 style?

and charging after the first year, by charging yearly.

Used to be a rumour but was pretty much confirmed that was not taking place in Windows 10.

Good move by Microsoft. They desperately need to pull everyone into the new ecosystem, and away from older versions of Windows. Makes it vastly more attractive to app developers, too, so they should make cash that way.

Not quite so free, after all, it seems.

Microsoft appears to have applied for a trademark for Windows 365 so it could happen, maybe after 10

I'm quite looking forward to upgrading to W10, all the features it's bringing look great! Now if only they would add tabs to Windows Explorer.

It's what Microsoft said I believe - A quick google will find articles on that. Although any computer will probably come with Windows 8/8.1 which means a free upgrade to Windows 10 anyway.
