So we have looked at Pokémon generation one, Sonic The Hedgehog and Croc, so now I decided I would go with what I think the second best game is after Pokémon Diamond/Pearl for the Nintendo DS handheld console.

The World Ends With You, known as It's a Wonderful World in Japan, was developed by Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts team and Jupiter. It was inspired by one of the Kingdom Hearts games, Chain of Memories. The game was released in Japan in July 2007 and other countries in August 2008. There have also been a couple of enhanced versions for iOS and Android devices.

The game is set in a modern-day Shibuya shopping district in Tokyo. You play as Neku Sakuraba who I would describe as kind of a loner. He claims that he doesn't get people and blocks them out by wearing big headphones and listening to music; he goes about life by himself thus he is basically an anti-social teenage boy.

Neku has been killed and taken from the Realground (RG) where people continue living as normal, to the Underground (UG) which is pretty much an alternate universe. The UG is the playground of a game which has been created by a group known as Reapers. Each Player gets into the game by offering up their most prized possession in the hope of winning, with the winner having the choice to either be brought back to life or transcend to a higher form of spiritual existence. The game lasts a week and each day Players are given objectives which they have to complete otherwise they will face erasure. They aren't just up against tasks though, they are often attacked by enemies known as "Noise" which come in different shapes, sizes and strength. Players are able to fight back, but they can't do it alone. A Player needs to find another Player to form a Pact with. They also need to be able to use Pins that are given to Players as tools to be able to kill off Noise. Players must fight together because Noise exist in two zones simultaneously, so they need to be killed off in each zone.

To receive objectives, Players will get a text message and a timer, if there is one for a task it will burn into the Players' skin. It transpires that if one team of Players completes a task, the other Players are then safe from erasure as well. To bring down the number of Players, the Conductor of the week tasks other Reapers to get in the way and prevent Players from progressing. Sometimes Reapers place invisible walls in the way so Players can't reach a certain point where they need to get to. To get rid of the walls you must defeat the Noise in the area. Once a team of Players have completed tasks, they find themselves at the start of the next day, sometimes transported to a completely different area to where they were the previous day. The Players have no recollection of how they got to the starting point nor of anything happening in between.

Be warned, from here on there will be spoilers.
When you take control of Neku, he seems to wake up and he is at first confused as to how he got to where he was; he has lost all of his memories as well. He finds that he can hear what people are thinking, but other people can't interact or actually see Neku now. He finds a Pin (or Badge) in his hand, which is black and has a white skull on it - he is unsure of how he got it. Just to note, it's the Pin that actually allows Neku to hear other's thoughts. He then gets a message on his phone, which says "Reach 104. You have 60 minutes. Fail and face erasure - The Reapers". He believes it's a spam message, so tries to delete it, but finds that he actually can't. Neku then feels pain in his hand, looking at his hand he finds a timer showing 60 minutes then counting down. He gets attacked by weird looking frogs, which are actually Noise. Unable to attack back and unsure of what is going on, Neku flees the area.

A cutscene appears between two Reapers who discuss the new game. The Reapers make a game out of defeating the most Players for that week. After the cutscene, Neku has moved to a different area, coming to a halt as he thought he had outrun the Noise, he wonders again about what's going on. He is again attacked by Noise, but a girl rushes up to him and forces him into a Pact which they form. She hands him a Pin which he uses to defeat the Noise. The girl introduces herself as Shiki Misaki. She is surprised that Neku can use the Pin with ease and talks a lo, but Neku doesn't respond all that much, thinking that she is a bit crazy, as he still doesn't know why he is there or what is actually going on.

He runs off to get away from her, questioning why she is following him. Shiki thinks Neku is just being rude, but he is just unaware as I've said before. Eventually, he decides to go along with her as he sees things have been a bit crazy already, so he may as well go along with it. They try to complete the mission by going to the ten-four building but find their route is blocked by a wall. Neku notices a guy in a red hoody watching them. Once the guy in the red hoody (a Reaper) confirms that Neku and Shiki have formed a Pact, they are allowed through. When Neku notices they can now get through, he also notices the Reaper has vanished and continues to have suspicions about the guy's involvement. Once they reach the ten-four building, they have to protect themselves from more Noise, which they successfully erase. Each time you complete a stage of attacking noise, Neku and Shiki receive some Pins for money (Yen), sometimes you will get Pins that you can use to attack aswell, plus various other things that will help you along in the game. Once completed, the mission and the game ends, sending you to a black screen signalling the chapter has finished and you get the chance to save your game.

There will be more to come on this game soon, so...

To be continued...
