Volunteering at Charity Shops

I very recently started to volunteer at the local charity shop in the 'village'. So far I've become 'friends' with lots of people who are much older than I but it's interesting. People are so quick to share their personal stories with others.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on whether it's worth the time to volunteer (selfish reasons wise)? Or if you've ever volunteered and have any handy tips to stay on the right path. :)

I've volunteered in like three different places, once in a shop which was last summer. I mainly took it up because it is very difficult to get a job where I'm from and I wanted to spend my time doing something meaningful, rather than sat at home on the internet :P I met so many lovely people, all of which were a lot older than me. I always tried to keep myself busy doing it and it was handy that I got to know the people very well and we all had our own roles.

At the moment I pretty much wait for a command and follow it out, I see what you mean though about everyone's roles. Where I'm at there's a good mix of volunteers with half under 30 and everyone has their thing to do. I will surely find something to focus on (probably the box shelves, it makes me feel horrible when they aren't in size order haha)!

As you get used to the place, you'll just find yourself slotting into place and doing whatever needs to be done.

awhh yess!! I did volunteer for a charity shop last year, I lasted like a month before I slowly began stop going. It was very rewarding though, I met new people who told me their stories and I gained a new experience - even though I was the youngest volunteer there!

i took an application for the salvation army a few months ago but never gave it in, wish i had though

think i'm going to do it when i start my second year of uni though, i've never had a job before so it will help with my cv

I volunteered for a charity shop which great, I was the youngest and it was like a WH Smith style shop in a hospital. People were all really nice and looks great on the CV. I still volunteer but now for the hospital's cinema, collecting patients, looking after them when the film is on, taking them back if they want to leave early/or when they leave. It's really rewarding. :)

I was gonna do some charity work when wanting to apply for the police. at the mo I work full time so just don't have the time right now :(

I should have done really in university for work experience but hey ho. Glad you like talking to older people though, I always do when out on transport/sitting around... can actually hold down a conversation as opposed to awkwardness and looking at their phone.

I always really liked the idea of working in a charity shop to gain experience and to help me with my CV. I ended up going into a job at 15 and have been in it since, so I was only going to use it as a starting point if needed. I think I'd still quite like to volunteer as it will give me a sense of offering my services for free and knowing that I'm helping out.

I have been employed for years consistently so never had the time. Regardless I probably wouldn't do it as there is no pay.

I've never volunteered at a charity shop and probably won't, but I have just begun the process of volunteering at my local school to run an after schools club.
