View Full Version : Windows 10 could be the last version of Windows

There's a lot of articles online talking about the possibility of Windows 10 being the last version of Windows with Windows 10 simply receiving updates regularly.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/7/8568473/windows-10-last-version-of-windows
I myself think it might cause more issues than anything - Some software for example might have compatibility issues with newer or older versions and helping computer users may become a little bit more tricky when trying to figure out which version they are on.
I do like the idea of smaller updates like we had with 8.1 being released but I think we still need a new full version for big changes to avoid issues. I'd like to see more updates to windows 10 e.g. 10.1 10.2 but later on when big changes are implemented a version 11
Also in other news Microsoft have just recently announced that Windows Media Centre will be discontinued and won't be included in version 10 and above due to the lack of usage but DVD playback should be added to Windows 10 at some point. It's also been announced that Microsoft Edge, previously Spartan, will replace Internet Explorer with Windows 10. IE has always had a bad image, seemingly since version 6 and hasn't really been able to remove that bad image no matter what improvements it made. A new browser with a new name might be a way to change this.

I have been using Windows 10 as my main operating system for awhile now and I haven't turned back. It's that balance between Windows 7 and 8, the fact that I've been getting build updates via Windows Update seems awesome!
Truly, I look forward to getting future major updates over the normal update system as it just makes sense.

Sadly there's a lot of people fearing Microsoft will use Windows 10 to eventually turn Windows into a subscription service but I think most people are panicking.
Obviously if they turn Windows into a service they'll need to make money but I think they'll do this with a yearly subscription type license or have subscription services available for the non subscription OS. Charging a monthly subscription would just cause too much backlash and even Microsoft aren't that stupid
I have a Mac nowadays so I don't know much about the PC, all I know is if it's anything like Windows 8 I hate it.
If they do turn it into a subscription service that could possibly deter pirates from having up to date software?

Don't think there will be any need to panic, it's not like you are forced to buy any Windows upgrades even if they did do this said "subscription" service. It'll be interesting to see what they will do with it though. Anyway can't wait for the actual release of Windows 10 so I can upgrade my main machine to it.

Not necessary. Adobe's Creative Cloud Suite is a monthly subscription service now but it's still cracked and pirated by people.
I don't think Microsoft will risk at least going down the monthly subscription way and if they do yearly it would have to be cheap. Making it an expensive or monthly subscription based service might make it trickier for pirates to get hold of but at the same time it'll also give them more reason to pirate. Obviously piracy will always be a problem and nothing can ever stop it but if Windows is very cheap/affordable then it will at least encourage many to buy, deterring them from pirating

Windows 10 is fantastic, already. This IS the last numbered version (confirmed), personally I am fine with this - if the price is right people will buy it (Office 365 seems to be hugely successful).

The problem is paying monthly for programs such as an office suite vs paying monthly for an entire OS is completely different. It all depends on frequency and price really.

I doubt they would make it monthly, perhaps yearly.

Would they really do a subscription based service? In this day and age the drive seems to be towards that you pay for the OS purely through buying your device, so if you buy a new computer or phone you are essentially buying the OS as a bundle. So if you own a device for 10 years and get these through build updates you are pretty much happy with a bargain, but loads of people change their devices quite often which to me seems like a way Microsoft could make their money for the OS without these different versions. Pretty much like Google do with Android and Chrome OS, and what Apple may soon do with iOS (unless they already do).
A subscription like you have for Anti-Virus just doesn't seem plausible or realistic, as Microsoft will probably have to strive towards releasing updates frequently and be incredibly active to make the service worth while. It just doesn't make sense from an operations viewpoint.

They have managed it with Office, but then I guess that is optional - you can't really have an OS that people cannot use unless they pay up front for it - unless word is bundled in or something.

from what I have read, this is the last version of windows.
I am guessing they will be updating the software over the years and just adding different things rather then a whole new change.
apps are now the new ui

That's why I wonder if they will keep the OS free and have different services that people can subscribe to e.g. A Music Service, Film Service, Office etc. hoping that those who get the free OS might in turn subscribe to one of the services.
Also with Windows 8 Microsoft seemed to state they'd be releasing updates more frequently so maybe this is the plan - a yearly fee but each year a big update

You can also 'reserve' your copy now, when an icon appears in the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar (little Windows button). If you have not already received the icon, you can (apparently) do this;
It's easy to make the pop up manually appear also if it hasn't already popped up for you:
Open Control Panel
Open Administrative Tools
Open Task Scheduler
Expand on the left "Task Scheduler Library"
Expand Microsoft
Expand Windows
Scroll down and Expand Setup
Click the folder "GWXTriggers"
On the far right is a bunch of options Click "Run"

If you have not entered your email, you must do it soon. Windows 10 is completely free for those who sign up during this period. I myself got the icon last night and I am ready. This is even better for me because the release date is around the time I get my balcony back. Enjoy mates. :)

I believe I read somewhere you get the upgrade regardless if genuine or not. The icon should be in your notification/system tray. If desktop, next to volume. If laptop, nest to battery. At least that's where it was for me.

However the actual update is being rolled out in stages, probably wise, as everyone updating at once would probably cause issues such as server crashes etc.
I am currently however testing a possible method for forcing the update. All I did for this was open command prompt and type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" (without "). I had windows update open at the same time which previously had found no updates but after using the command windows update stated to download the Windows 10 update.
It has downloaded and is currently preparing for installation - it apparently doesn't work for everyone - some people for example get to 100 percent download wise and get an error or something.

Should be the version you were trying to download but in ISO format instead. Plus you would get updates via Windows Update anyway.

Seems like your installation messed up somewhere. I used a lot of the preview builds and didn't have such issues.
---
If I download the ISO, can I use the same file on multiple pcs (all using legit windows?).
Currently overseas and will update the organisations computers if so. Cannot justify a 5gb download ten times though.

I assume so as long as you are doing upgrades and not clean installs. Mine isn't even activated at the moment but there was a post on reddit saying the activation servers was getting hammered. Hopefully it activate soon and I Haven't ****** up by going the quicker route of getting Windows 10.

If you do a normal upgrade you have the option to keep all your files and applications. I mean you can do a clean install if you really want to I suppose, I haven't tried it.

The search kinda sucks for me to be honest. It's like it's not indexing correctly but having a read it might be due to the changes they did to how it works between previous Windows and Windows 10 and someone saying a fresh install of it would make it work without a problem. As it would take whatever you have installed. Hmmm, I'll see how it goes before going down that route though.
