Grossed me out when I caught it on the news this morning aha.

Rat droppings, human urine and arsenic – these are just some of the substances found in fake beauty products that police say are putting consumers’ lives at risk.

In the UK it is estimated that at least £90m is spent every year on fake goods and with the rise of online shopping the production and sale of fake goods on the web is increasing.

Counterfeit beauty products in particular are becoming increasingly common and easily available on auction sites, online market places, rogue websites and social media.

Police said laboratory tests have shown counterfeit perfume often contains poisonous chemicals including cyanide and even human urine.

Fake cosmetics such as eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss and foundation have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and harmful substances such as arsenic, mercury and lead.

All of these can cause allergic reactions, such as skin irritation, swelling, rashes and burns along with longer-term health problems.

Counterfeit make-up is often produced in unsanitised and unhygienic factories and there have been cases where rats’ droppings and poison have also been found in the phoney cosmetics.

The things that go into fake products are ridiculous, sometimes it seems like the fraudsters are going to extremes to make things as bad as possible :P can you imagine just being like "hmmm I want to make some fake Mac blusher, best go dry out the contents of my bowels and crush it up, that's the easiest way". I am sure there are ways to replicate products that are far cheaper and easier than using poo and poison I mean why not just use powdered paint or something, our actual products aren't much more than finely ground dust anyway

Oh god, that's actually so scary. Whenever I buy makeup online I always go to sites I trust, so definitely sticking to it :P

I read articles where wealthy celebrities actually pay for snail slime/bird poo facials so you can laugh with this but there's actually people out there paying a lot more for these sorts of treatments who are serious about it rather than being decieved.

My brass teacher swore by using his own pee on his lips to keep them soft. So yeah, people do actually put interesting things on them on purpose.

But yeah, that's quite scary really. (Not the pee on his lips, the poison1!!!)

Snail slime does supposedly help. Bird poo just sounds diseased though...

Bizarre, given that urine makes your skin harder (miners used to pee on their hands for this reason).

It could have been to make them harder then. He never gave me an explanation and I was like 7 so I've always had to create my own explanation to stop being mentally scarred by the images of him wiping pee on his face.
