MPs back calls for English national anthem

MPs have given initial support to the idea of England adopting an official national anthem.
God Save the Queen, the national anthem for the UK as a whole, is currently used for England during most sporting events.
However, Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins believes England needs its own anthem and presented his case in the House of Commons as a ten minute rule motion.
His English National Anthem Bill was adopted by the House.
The idea will be debated again at a second reading on 4 March.
I love Jerusalem, Hope and Glory and so on as much as the next person but can our useless MPs please stop meddling with the constitution. I blame devolution for all this.... I was speaking with my mum about it before and she said she's for England having its own "because Scotland, Wales have theirs" so I asked if she even knew the words to Jerusalem and she didn't. It's another case of devolution driving devolution elsewhere.
The fact is that as sadly our schools don't teach any British patriotism or Christian hymns anymore and are instead taught to hate and feel ashamed of their own country, many people now could barely tell you the words to God Save the Queen let alone Jerusalem and others. Can you imagine how cringeworthy it is going to be at sports events when the French belt out Marseille and all the English are humming Jerusalem which they don't even know the words to?
The bill would bestow a responsibility on the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to hold a consultation across the UK, and Mr Perkins suggested there could even be an "X Factor style programme" to select a song.
Wow great idea! Let's trivialise and bring the constitution and national anthem down to the level of a reality television show.
I hope it doesn't pass any further than this anyway.
