MPs back calls for English national anthem

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02705/St-George_s-Day_2705594b.jpg

MPs have given initial support to the idea of England adopting an official national anthem.

God Save the Queen, the national anthem for the UK as a whole, is currently used for England during most sporting events.

However, Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins believes England needs its own anthem and presented his case in the House of Commons as a ten minute rule motion.

His English National Anthem Bill was adopted by the House.

The idea will be debated again at a second reading on 4 March.

I love Jerusalem, Hope and Glory and so on as much as the next person but can our useless MPs please stop meddling with the constitution. I blame devolution for all this.... I was speaking with my mum about it before and she said she's for England having its own "because Scotland, Wales have theirs" so I asked if she even knew the words to Jerusalem and she didn't. It's another case of devolution driving devolution elsewhere.

The fact is that as sadly our schools don't teach any British patriotism or Christian hymns anymore and are instead taught to hate and feel ashamed of their own country, many people now could barely tell you the words to God Save the Queen let alone Jerusalem and others. Can you imagine how cringeworthy it is going to be at sports events when the French belt out Marseille and all the English are humming Jerusalem which they don't even know the words to?

The bill would bestow a responsibility on the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to hold a consultation across the UK, and Mr Perkins suggested there could even be an "X Factor style programme" to select a song.

Wow great idea! Let's trivialise and bring the constitution and national anthem down to the level of a reality television show.

I hope it doesn't pass any further than this anyway.

Maybe that should be our ''national anthem'' and it just so happens to be adopted by Welsh and Scottish athletes for certain sporting events. I don't see the need to change it at all.

I am only prepared to agree with this as a thing if we can have Bohemian Rhapsody (h)

Can imagine everyone doing all the different parts and getting into it and being really enthusiastic with air guitars at that bit and MAN I would go to sport games if that were a thing.

Don't we sing flower of scotland for all/most sports event

If only there were more important things in the country to focus on than an English national anthem.

It should just stay as it is, it doesn't need to be changed nor is it a priority surely?

Also Dan the X Factor is meant to be a talent show more than a reality TV show I believe, although some of the people in it usually makes you wonder. If they were to decide like that there would always be people who didn't agree with it or like it, but as God Save The Queen has been around so long you don't really see people with an issue with it and it. Plus, if it was decided by a show like that it might just end up like choosing the Eurovision song and we definitely haven't perfected that yet :P.

Oh, bet Justin Biebers song "Sorry' will be the next national anthem.

Oh gosh! How long has it been this way?! Seems like a case of fixing something that isn't broken to me! :P

Although if it did change I suggest "The winner takes it all" by ABBA! :)

But Martin the whole point of that song in Mamma Mia is that Meryl Streep is losing out on everything so would that be the best thing for us to sing before sports matches?! Setting ourselves up to fail

I think really that we should keep the current anthem but maybe other countries should stop using it? im not quite sure how easy that would be but surely no point changing things that have been going for a long time

I don't really see a point, Wales and Scotland don't use it regularly, it's only used if it's a British sporting event rather than a single nation anyway.

Agree with this all the way. There's matters currently that are overwhelmingly important but they are meddling with the national anthem

YouGov have done some polling on the issue.

By all means if it came to a referendum I could see the status quo (God Save the Queen) being picked. So the entire exercise is a waste of parliamentary time.

On the sports teams point, if you ask me I would like to see the home nation teams merge into a British team...... FIFA have raised this in the past.

England already has its own specific national anthem
