The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers to cease printing
https://static-secure.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/About/General/2011/11/11/1321019635695/independent-newspaper-007.jpg
The Independent newspaper, a standard bearer for Britain’s left-wing media establishment for 29 years, has announced that it will close its print section and go “online only” from March 2016.
The owners of the Independent and the Independent on Sunday, ESI Media, have confirmed that they will cease printing operations for the papers in March. They are currently in talks with Johnson Press to sell sister-publication i for £24 million.
ESI Media owner Evgeny Lebedev confirmed the changes in a letter to employees writing: “I can now confirm we are selling The Independent’s sister paper, i, to Johnston Press, subject to Johnston Press shareholder approval.
The newspaper is renowned for its heavily left-wing slant, often using its front pages to promote the euro currency, climate change, and radical feminism.
Great news to wake up to this morning.
Yes my dears there's only a limited market if you read to write how evil Britain is, how white people are bad and how immigration is absolutely wonderful and that market - students, the BBC offices and Islington in London - isn't enough to sustain a national newspaper. So it's curtains for the Indy.
It won't be long now before the print of the Guardian follows too because it too also fails to sell very many copies at all and ironically is only being kept afloat with some interesting tax arrangements in the Cayman Islands. You know, the same kind tax arrangements it criticises everybody else over not paying whilst campaigning for higher spending and higher taxes on businesses and people who are successful.
Always makes me laugh on current affairs programmes when people go "THE RIGHT WING PRESS" well there's a left wing press but nobody buying it.
Thoughts?

Didn't The Sun endorse Labour 1997 to 2005?
Don't The Sun and Daily Express sell millions of copies?
To be witty you have to say something that is grounded in fact not something you thought of after having one WKD xx

Yeah because the owner of the express didnt sponser UKIPS election campaign at all did he?
And do I really need to talk about Rupert Murdoch and David Cameron being best mates..lmaoo
The fact that the sun endorsed the labour party from 1997 to 2005 says more about tony blair being a red tory than it does about the sun.
And the sensationalist headlines from the daily express and the sun help sell papers trash like
''MUSLIMS WILL CONVERT YOUR CAT TO ISLAM AND MAKE IT WEAR A HIJAB''
''MUSLIMS WANT TO BEHEAD ALL PIG FARMERS''
''IMMIGRANTS STEAL POLICEMANS HELMET AND DEFECATES IN IT,AND WANT YOUR BENEFITS!''

But despite all this which you say, they sell papers, and the Independent and Guardian do not.
Sales figures speak volumes about what people think. Funny how the papers which backed Labour are closing down. :D

But my opinions are more aligned with the British public than you, as newspaper sales and polling shows.
I am pro-controlled immigration, the British public are.
I am strongly eurosceptic, the British public are.
I back selective education, a strong portion of the public do.
I back cutting state spending, a strong portion of the public do.
I strongly support the monarchy, as do the vast majority of the public.
I back the death penalty, around half of the population agree with me.
I am against pointless foreign adventures, the majority of the public agree with me.
I am against opening the borders of Britain to those from Syria and Iraq, the public agree with me.
Most stuff I post on here is mainstream public opinion which is why even Labour/the Conservatives pretend to support much of the above at election time.

I love how you actually believe the Independent is factual.
Next up from Akeam, Johann Hari is the journalist to read. He has all the facts.

Nope, I don't know best, i'm just pointing out that polling has found the average citizen to be misinformed about current affairs, and that the independent polling body Ipsos Mori is not the same thing as the independent newspaper.
- - - Updated - - -
Oh the irony. You said this previously about the same polling body that carried out the one I posted:
I am sure I have told you this before, but here it goes again - when a poll says YouGov/The Sun or Survation/The Guardian it doesn't mean that the poll was exclusively of Sun or Guardian readers. All the Pollster/Newspaper thing means is who carried out the poll and who commissioned the poll. The poll itself is free of newspaper bias and is as scientific as any other poll carried out.
So this isn't a poll of Sun readers just as an Observer/Survation poll isn't a poll of Observer readers.

Popularity can be an indicator of common sense hence why there are so many intelligent yet immensely stupid politicians and academics. Theory vs real world.
I never call sections of the public stupid for disagreement with me. I do use popularity as a justification though, cos like that thing called democracy.

Do you know why the Daily Mail and The Sun sells papers? Because the language is so dumbed down it is ideal for those who do not wish to use their brains and ideal for those wish to read what they want to read, not the actual facts. FYI - Daily Mail figures have dropped from 2,120,347 in 2010 to 1,437,541 (current). Daily Mail has lost over 250,000 readers in the last year (whereas Independent has only lost 130,883) - this itself speaks volumes on the British peoples opinion of your beloved paper. All newspapers have lost a large percentage of subscriptions over the last 5 years as digital reading is becoming more preferable for people. The only reason Independent is moving to fully digital is because it started off with low figures and the drop (which all newspapers have suffered) in subscriptions is no longer sustainable to carry on printing.
It won't be long till all newspapers go 100% digital - some will take longer than others but over time they will all do this. I'd like to know where the Gurdian and Independent have shown sympathy for terrorists or pedophiles?
But my opinions are more aligned with the British public than you, as newspaper sales and polling shows.

If your opinion was truly the opinion of the majority of British public then we would have a totally different political party in power right now. The surveys/polling are rarely correct - the last general election is the perfect example of this. The EU vote will also prove this.
Ohhh yesss but the Independent is always right. That's why it is closing down.

It goes to show how out of touch you are when you write bitter paragraphs below basically calling the public stupid because they disagree with you. It is very noticeable that when people such as yourself lose arguments or even elections, you'll resort to calling people stupid for the mere act of disagreement with you rather than analysing your own opinions or your own tactics when it comes to debate and reason. We've seen it before numerous times on the left with the prime example of Gordon Brown calling a loyal Labour voter a 'bigot' when the cameras were away for simply bringing up an issue of importance to him. How dare she! The stupid oik! Don't the peasant working classes know what is best for them!?
The attitude stinks. Drop it. I bet you believe, like Akeam, that the public are too stupid to vote on the EU too?
Do you know why the Daily Mail and The Sun sells papers? Because the language is so dumbed down it is ideal for those who do not wish to use their brains and ideal for those wish to read what they want to read, not the actual facts. I have no idea why you refer to the Daily Mail as my beloved paper when you actually have no idea what my opinion on the Daily Mail is because I don't believe I have told you. Again you're assuming what I think rather than what I actually think. The ills and positives of the Daily Mail and others aside, I am still very happy that newspaper like the Independent which like to think of themselves as really really clever (like you basically calling the population dumbed down just because they read a newspaper you disagree with) is failing to sell. Articles on how immigration is just wonderful, the EU is amazing and how white people are racist just doesn't sell outside university/the BBC. I know that might come as a shock to you but try talking to some normal working people out there sometime.
On the numbers, they've been steadying for most newspapers now for a while (the drops are not as they were a few years ago) which suggests papers such as The Sun and the Daily Mail will be around for a lot longer. Even papers such as The Spectator which have little publicity and small readerships are countering the trend downwards. Can't say the same for the Independent and Guardian though. One already down, one more to go. :D
It won't be long till all newspapers go 100% digital - some will take longer than others but over time they will all do this. I'd like to know where the Gurdian and Independent have shown sympathy for terrorists or pedophiles?

http://www.theguardian.com/comment/story/0,3604,530504,00.html
I could go on, but the themes are a constant white people=bad, islam=great, christianity=bad, immigration=great, complaints about immigration=racist, daily mail=for stupid people, tax dodgers=bad (although guilty of it ourselves), unpaid internships=bad (although guilty ourselves), wealthy people=bad (although likes of Polly Toynbee have a Tuscan villa). It goes on and on and on. The stench of hypocrisy and hatred for everything decent in this country and western society is appalling. It stinks to high heaven, and that is why nobody reads it other than students, BBC staff and people living in north London.
You may think of yourself as cleverer than everybody else for reading it but the reality is you are just out of touch, not clever.
If your opinion was truly the opinion of the majority of British public then we would have a totally different political party in power right now. The surveys/polling are rarely correct - the last general election is the perfect example of this. The EU vote will also prove this.
No smart arse, voting is a tribal act for most of the public. It has been shown in study after study that in Labour areas, especially poorer and in the north for example, right-wing ideas such as the death penalty, tightening immigration and tough criminal justice and punishment are far more popular than in middle class Tory areas in the shires. Yet areas like mine vote Labour in amazing numbers. It is purely tribal, see the changeover in Scotland of how a sudden change can result in a tribal party being overthrown in one night after decades of loyalty.
In any case, the last election had the supposed right wing parties win over 50% of the vote (Conservative+Ukip+DUP).
It isn't closing down, it is moving online. Oh gosh, you speak just like your crappy Daily Mail paper - a news paper where almost every online article has spelling mistakes.
It basically is. It will struggle to hold on to staff and do investigative stories on just online revenue.

Ans to Q1: Because you appear to think they are true bastions of truth among newspapers hence this debate.
Ans to Q2: I rarely quote from the Daily Mail. Infact you'd be hard pressed to see the last time I quoted it even for a story.

Oh so you agree with lowering the age of consent to 14 and that terrorism can be justified?
Then that explains why you like the Guardian newspaper. But don't assume your tastes and thoughts to be those of the nation as a whole, that's all.
I'm glad you agree. ;)
It says a lot about the difference between you and I in character & the sides we stand on when I refuse to ever say X will for sure happen in the referendum/election (arrogance) and that people who read a different paper to you are stupid (which I would never ever say). Why insult the public?
You'll see for example when the referendum results are announced. That night if Leave win I will be greatly pleased but I will be humble & won't wish to rub anybody's noses in it because there's such a thing as being a ungracious victor. You and some others on the other hand would love to crow.

Nobody denies all papers have had it rough and face a battle ahead. But the Mail is top/second top best-seller near 2 million copies.
Meanwhile the Independent and Guardian are either ceasing to print or are the lowest on that table. The figures say it all.
