Dustin Lance Black lashes out at Sam Smith on Twitter for 'texting' his fiancé Tom Daley... and blasts singer for claiming to be first openly gay Oscar-winner

Sam Smith caused controversy at the Oscars when he claimed he was the first openly gay star to win an Oscar.

And acclaimed screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has hit back at the singer on Twitter following the incident, reminding Sam that he'd won an Academy Award himself for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for Milk. The openly-gay star also took the opportunity to publicly blast Sam for 'texting' his fiancé Tom Daley, sending social media into meltdown with his cutting comment.

Lance, 41, took to social media to shut down Sam in spectacular fashion, writing, 'Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.'

The LGBT rights activist added, 'Here's a start', before sharing a link to a video of him accepting his award at the 81st Academy Awards from presenters Tina Fey and Steve Martin. Fans went wild following the Twitter spat, sharing endless funny memes about the clash. Several posted humorous GIFs of celebrities pulling awkward faces, while others opted for the classic 'tea sipping' diss.

Lance and Olympic diver Tom, 21, got engaged in October 2015 after two years together. MailOnline has contacted both Lance and Sam's representatives for comment. This comes after Sam dedicated his Academy Award for best original song to the LGBT community on Sunday. Sam and songwriter Jimmy Napes won the prize for Writing's On the Wall from Spectre, which followed in the footsteps of Adele's more critically praised Bond song Skyfall by taking the gong.

omgggggg the Oscars were even worse than I expected.

First we had these two girls fighting. And let me just say this, Sam you won an Oscar because of you are musically talented. You didn't win it because you are gay. Infact, you being gay has absolutely nothing to do with winning an Oscar. Same goes for Dustin Lance Black. I love how Sam Smith in his speech mentioned wanting equality too, here he is standing there winning an Oscar and still has the nerve to peddle that lie. Get a grip girls.

THEN we had Leo DiCaprio winning his Oscar. Hey he's a great actor but WHY Leo did you have to drone on about global warming... it's not even as though you had anything original to say about it either, something along the lines of "global warming is real" - ah well if you Leo an actor says so then it must be true! I'd take him a tad more seriously too if he didn't fly around the world on a private jet not to mention his huge yacht.

See this why I like the oldies like Dame Angela Lansbury. They arrive there, don't tend to **** anyone off, get up and thank the production teams and their families and then get off the stage. Dignified and don't make a big song and dance of it. Classy and humble in victory. Events like the Oscars make me miss Queen of the Red Carpet Joan Rivers even more than ever... was always there on the red carpet to ground these vain people.

Thoughts?

Not to cause an argument, I'm pretty sure he said climate change and not global warming. And according to a few websites there is a difference between the two.

yeah they changed the term a few years back when the temperatures started cooling rather than warming.

if he truly believed in it and you know like reflected it in his life style as some greens/hippies do then fair play to them i don't agree with them and think it's wacky but at least his words would match his actions. instead he stands there lecturing everyone else (mostly poorer than him) on it. stick to acting leo x

i think leo is doing much more than any of us could do about climate change so we have no place to speak on him using a private jet or what not. he saw his platform where he could have made it about him but decided to give the time to a worthy cause and what he believes is important. Also i dont think he is expected to walk everywhere to get from place a to place b? hes a celebrity who has many appearances around the world so obviously has to travel lots.

on another note, wtf with stacey dash lol

and total surprise with spotlight winning the big picture

Sam Smith caused controversy at the Oscars when he claimed he was the first openly gay star to win an Oscar.

No. He said:
"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an oscar. If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand as equals one day."

The Daily Mail, in true Daily Mail style, has made a mountain out of a molehill as usual and this Dustin Lance Black has massively overreacted to a misquote from Sir Ian McKellen (who has said since then that the article said no openly gay man has ever won the oscar for best actor).

Empired;

he's still bringing his sexuality into it, what has him being gay got to do with the price of fish

it's classic little miss victim waffle.

No because he's not saying he won an Oscar because he's gay? I agree with you: being gay has absolutely nothing to do with winning an Oscar. He said he wants to dedicate his award to the LGBT community, that is not the same as saying you won something because of your sexuality.

I really hope you aren't condemning mentioning sexuality in an acceptance speech as people should be at liberty to dedicate an award to whoever the hell they like, whether that's their mother or the entire gay community.

as for leonardo dicaprio, i don't see nothing wrong with his speech or trying to cause awareness for a group of people that were (at least i think) involved in his movie too.

the dustin lance black and sam smith thing is quite stupid, i don't understand why dustin had to reply with such a petty remark. sam smith has only misread the sir ian mckellan quote as well and i don't think he deserved dustins reply. it definitely isn't a 'fight' between them though, sam has done nothing wrong essentially other than make a inaccurate statement. has he even replied to dustin yet?

he's at liberty to do it but the rest of us are at liberty to scorn him for making it into a political/agenda thing. i had no idea the "gay community" whatever that actually is gave sam smith vocal lessons or really did anything for his singing career. it actually makes me cringe. okay sam you like boys we get it.

i feel passionate about a lot of things but the last thing i would do on winning an oscar is give a lecture on town planning, gardening or the european union lol.

that's how you accept an oscar award. talking about films, acting (hence what the award is for) and thanking people throughout her career. no grandstanding.

Great. Then you give your acceptance speech like Angela Lansbury and let Sam Smith say what he likes too. Problem solved.
