Medical sciences have come a very long way within the last century, introducing more and more cures for diseases and conditions than ever before, with more being developed everyday! Some of the achievements met within the past 10 years or so are outstanding! From functioning fake limbs to even a machine that can work as your heart. In the medieval times, most medicines were just ground up herbs, spices and other forms of plant, in hope that any infections would go down; however, they had nothing like the machinery we do today.

For this competition, I would like you to tell me the most astonishing medical achievement you can find. The most amazing shall win!

Prize: 10 Credits, 2 Raffle Tickets and 15 Rep

Gene-Based Cancer Therapy.
There are few words more terrifying than cancer. Cancer actually refers to many related diseases which are caused by uncontrolled cell growth. It can occur anywhere in the body, and is often a death sentence. Our understanding of its causes and its potential cures is incomplete, simply because it is such a varied and complex beast. But a significant new avenue for treating cancer comes from our increasing ability to sequence and analyze genetic information. When Dr Lukas Wartman, a cancer researcher, developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia, his colleagues put all of their other work on hold in an attempt to save him. They employed a a type of analysis that had never been tried before, running a sequencing machine and supercomputer non-stop in an attempt to identify the gene that might be causing his cancer. They found one, and luckily a new drug, which had only been previously tested on kidney cancer, was able to shut the gene down. Dr Wartman was the first person ever to take this drug for leukemia, and his cancer went into remission. This new process—sequencing the DNA and RNA from tumors to find a cancer-causing mutation—offers the promise of more effective and focused treatment. The phrase “cure for cancer” remains a meaningless oversimplification, but this is a technology and treatment method with the potential to help across many types of the disease, and ultimately save more lives.

Antibiotic is the most astonishing founding by the scientist. Without it, our body may easily got sickness and takes a longer time to heal. Antibiotic is also use for protecting our system immune, without it we may be looking like a zombie because our skin has decay and infected by the bacteria or others organism. Thank god antibiotic were found.

The Seizure Stopper

For the 840,000 epileptics suffering from sudden, uncontrollable seizures, the NeuroPace is like “a defibrillator for your brain,” Dr. Roizen says.

The system includes sensors implanted in the brain that can spot the first tremors of an oncoming seizure. Then it sends electrical pulses that counteract the brain's own haywire signals, stopping the seizure in its tracks.
Even more impressive: The NeuroPace can be fine-tuned by doctors based on its performance. In the first year it was available, seizure episodes were reduced by an average of 40 percent—but 2 years later, they dropped by 53 percent.

The idea of taking someone else's poop and giving it a new home in your own colon may sound repulsive, but the treatment has proven remarkably effective in curing infections of C. difficile—a nasty bacteria that kills 15,000 people each year.

The digested food waste in feces isn't itself the cure. You're simply gaining some of the helpful bacteria living in the donor's gut—like a farmer choosing the hardiest crops to seed next year's fields.

“The bacteria produce proteins that are involved in a lot more diseases than we realized,” says Dr. Roizen. Still grossed out? Researchers in Canada have developed a method to deliver just the bacteria—no feces—via an oral pill, skipping the need for a poo enema.
