Four Dallas police officers have been shot dead by snipers during protests against the shooting of black men by police, the authorities say.

An "intensive" search for suspects was under way, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said.

Gunfire broke out as demonstrators marched through the city, sending them fleeing for cover.

The protests were sparked by the deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

Another eight police officers were injured, Mr Brown said. Two are in surgery, one is in a critical condition.

Woke up to this news. Awful. I think the gunman has been killed now?

I saw the video of the guy who was shot in the car by police... I do hope it works both ways and those officers get reprimanded for shooting an innocent man just as this other gunman should for killing, although if he's dead, at least he is off the streets!

Kinda felt it was only a matter of time for something like this to to happen, absolutely tragic for the officers' families. It's a broken system and that isn't the way to get it fixed.

How many more will it take? After the orlando shootings, just like every other time people have died/been seriously injured due to gun crime we're promised it'll never happen again and then here we are a few weeks later :/

It's absurd and I hope justice is reached involving everyone, police and civilian alike.
