So I passed my driving test about a week ago! I probably wont be getting a car for awhile now but I've been looking to see if there's any I like. I came across a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI Sport 5dr but I'm worried the insurance will be really high considering it's a 1.6 litre & is described as a sport car :( I've also been looking at polo's but I think I prefer the Golf, it seems so much better. I'm pretty useless when it comes to cars tbh.
I know there's a thread on what car you have but can any one with a 1.6 litre car or "sport" car give me a rough idea on what their insurance costs? I know insurance is different depending on age ect but I only want a rough idea :) I'm also 19.
I would do one of those quotes but I haven't received my Driving Licence card yet & they ask details I don't know.
If you think the car choice isn't a good one, what car do you suggest? Under £3,000
(I hope I don't sound like an idiot lol!) :D

anything with sport in it as your first car will hugely increase the price.
they don't ask for details on your driving license, some ask you for your number but its optional. you can fill in quotes on moneysupermarket/comparethemarket etc without having a driving license through the door.
honestly for your first car go with a cheaper car with smaller engine cause you'll probably crash it

I just don't want to pay over £2000 insurance and oh I didn't realise it was an optional section, I'll try it again. I'll probably crash it? Don't scare me lol!

I can't remember the stats but I'm sure majority of new drivers crash in their first year.

Almost every single car I've looked at has been around £2800 :/ Even 1.4 :(

Where do you live sibel? Cos they look at your postcode statistics so if you live in an area with high car crime or crime in general the quotes go up sooo much
My quotes have always been around £1400 even for 1.4's so it's mad yours are so high! Are you looking at really old cars with super high mileage?
Infact send me a link on sk of one of the cars you're looking at and I'll see if my quotes are the same
I got a 1.0 Corsa and my insurance was 1.2 I think first year

My area is pretty good tbh and I've even put in Renault Clio 1.4 16v Expression to check (not a car I want) and that's like £2600.
I think I might just go to a Ford Dealer Ship closer to when I actually can get a car x

Omg, I'm only on £500 a month atm, hoping they keep me on & I get more hours so I can actually run a car

My parents had to help me out to pay mine. I had to pay them back though. I was like you on just over £500 a month.

I don't get why new drivers spend loads on a car, it's not gonna offset the insurance by enough to be worth it. Get a £300 clapped out machine that'll force its way through the MOT once or twice, completely false economy spending any more since you'll prob only have a £3k machine for the same amount of time anyway and realistically a car's a car

That's not much for a car, especially one that's not going to have issues every few weeks/months.

The smaller the engine, the better.
Parents as named drivers also bring the price down too
Black boxes make it cheaper too, but I really wouldn't go for one of them
i got a shitty little R reg fiesta as my first car, my insurance was £700. Getting my no claims up on my first couple of cars brought my insurance down to below £300 until I crashed last year and now my insurance is around £500, because my dad opted to up his insurance premiums whilst keeping his no claims so mine stayed at a lower price, but yeah, basically go for what's affordable until you get enough experience to bring prices down.
even new fiestas have 1 litre engines that have fairly low insurance costs in the scheme of things

Put the car in your mum or dad's name and have you as a named driver. It'll work out significantly cheaper, and maybe even more so if you add the other parent also as a named driver.
Only problem with this method is you're not clocking up a no claims bonus, but you can start building that once you've had the licence for a couple years (as insurance gets cheaper with your age and also the age of the licence).

and if you're parents aren't found to be the main drivers then you're insurance will just void your claim and gl with insurance for 5 years.
it's also illegal and called fronting.
You ideally want a 1 litre car in the lowest insurance bracket (google it), drive that for a year, get a no claims bonus then work your way up (Don't be put as a named driver, as though cheaper, you dont get a No claims bonus which lowers your insurance, but add your parents to yours if they've been driving a while and had no claims as this brings it down) You won't get anything fancy at 19 without paying an absolute fortune, then if you crash, well, you're fucked!!
For comparison, I have a 1.4l VW polo, this now costs me around £400 a year. I've been driving for 3 years, so it's taken time to lower it down and the no claims helps too. Also doing less miles (or claiming that you do) lowers the insurance, as the less you drive, the less of a risk you are.
In in my first year, I had a 1l corsa, the insurance was like 2k, but nothing I could do about it at 19, that was basically the lowest insurance bracket you can get

i realllllllly wouldnt recommend that at all, my mum had a smart car for a number of years so unless things have changed since then this is why its not a gr8 idea;
smart cars might seem like a good option upfront however if it breaks it will be so ridiculously expensive because they only use mercedes parts, which as im sure ull know, mercedes are v expensive ;) so parts and labour will add up to so much more than if you got a different brand car
unless with the recent 'return' of smart cars theyve changed how their parts work and who can do it etc, youll be forking out a lot for repairs
sooooo unless you plan on getting a relatively new one which will hopefully have no faults at the beginning, i wouldnt recommend it cos in the long run youre more likely to pay more !

Yeah I know the parts are expensive to get replaced but I'm sure it'll be fine just for a year. My boyfriend has already said about it :P I'm pretty stuck though as everything else is so expensive for insurance :(

Yeye other than that it's actually a really good car ! i mean you can push it over if you tried but other than that ;) but yh when my mum had one it was super reliable and not as bad as everyone makes it out to be (other than when her exhaust fell off)

Haha and omg xD I've been looking at the 2011 ones but my mind might change by the time I can actually get a car. We'll see :)
Why don't you get a 5 seater!! 1.l corsa, perfect for the first year :p

Yeah well I will look into it all properly when I can actually afford to run a car :p I'm not worried about the amount of seats though, I don't need more than 2 tbh :)
