American voters are heading to the polls to elect the 45th President of the United States

http://www.politicsdebate2016.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/article-banner-1024x293.png

Polls have opened to American voters after a star-studded climax to a campaign that could elect either the first female president of the United States or a celebrity billionaire who threatens to rewrite the rules of politics forever.

Minutes after midnight the traditional first election day ballot was cast in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, as Lady Gaga in North Carolina and Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence in Michigan introduced competing last-ditch rallies.

With a fumbled start that many will hope does not herald more serious voting irregularities to come, residents of Dixville delivered four votes for Hillary Clinton, two for Trump, one for libertarian Gary Johnson and a quirky write-in for the 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Democrats were cautiously optimistic of national victory after Trump’s promise to build a wall against immigrants appeared instead to be bolstering Clinton’s electoral firewall.

Analysis of early voting behaviour suggested the Republican candidate may have stirred a demographic giant by encouraging up to 87% more Hispanic voters than usual in states such as Florida.

Democrats began election day with an average lead in national opinion polling of around three points, though state-level polling suggested several possible paths to victory also remained for Trump among white working-class voters.

Leaving nothing to chance, Clinton and President Barack Obama held afternoon rallies in Michigan on Monday and appeared on stage together in Philadelphia with Bruce Springsteen, a one-man songbook for America’s blue-collar angst.

But Trump was voicing equal confidence he could pull off a surprise victory that would send shockwaves around the world, hoping to channel anger over jobs and trade into an election day upset without parallel.

“Today is our independence day,” he told the audience in Grand Rapids. “Today the American working class is going to strike back, finally.”

“We have one flawed candidate left to beat,” added Trump, reeling off his list of equally unexpected wins in the Republican primary. “It’s going to be the beginning of a new adventure.”

The Trump camp went into the final day of the campaign needing an almost clean sweep of battleground states such as Florida and North Carolina to win outright, plus a series of shock wins in the rustbelt that looked less and less likely.

But sensing possible danger, the Clinton campaign poured last-minute resources into the industrial midwest, a region where she struggled against a similar antiestablishment surge for Bernie Sanders during the primary election season.

Also up for election are some high profile politicians of the US Senate and the House of Representatives.

795941441520488448

Electorally Trump needs to win a bigger victory than Clinton in number of states won to win the Presidency. The magic number of electoral college votes required is the 270 mark with states such as Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Michigan and Virginia being key swing states. Especially Florida which is pretty much decisive and certainly was in 2000.

In terms of the Senate and the House of Representatives both are currently controlled by the Republican Party so the Democrats (if they win the Presidency) will be desperate to win the Congress otherwise passing legislation will be very hard and a President Clinton may end up very much as a 'lame duck' as they say in the states.

Anyway vote in the poll. I have included the four main candidates with ballot access on a national scale.

Clinton is the lesser of two evils, but Trump is perhaps the biggest joke in political history and clearly hasn't a clue what he's doing. Should he win, he'll probably wind up dead.

If the peso's down doesn't that mean the dollar is strengthening relative to it? Also it's still technically possible that the electoral college members could all be like "nah Stein can have it" which would be hilarious :P

My point was that voting to leave the EU was stupid.

That's a matter of opinion, over half the voters think that voting to stay was stupid. This is giving the most powerful country in the world to a man who's bankrupted more companies than he's succeeded with, that's dangerous no matter what anyone's opinion is

It's extremely unlikely now, he's even winning Pennsylvania which was meant to be a big win for Clinton. A lot of the half-reported states are leaning towards Trump, so when the rest of the people in those areas get counted up the electoral college votes will go even higher for him. It's unbelievable stuff and just shows what a bad choice Hillary was for the Democrats really

Interesting graphic on BBC just now showing that Hillary needs to somehow swing AT LEAST 2 of the states that she's currently losing to get it. Pennsylvania and Michigan couldddd go with her but looking less and less likely. On a lighter note this Scottish guy on at the moment keeps saying "latino/latina" in a really bad Spanish accent and it's hilarious

All good things come to an end, looks like that's America.

In all seriousness though, no matter who you would have backed or supported throughout the campaigns, you still need to now back the President no matter who, otherwise the country will just tear itself apart even more (since the beginning of this vicious 16 month period), instead of uniting and growing stronger and supporting (apprehensively) the decisions of Trump now he is in Presidency- .

Can we just admire Canada for a second...

In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens.

Social media meltdown as left wing liberals are shocked and horrified to discover for the second time this year that not everybody else - the majority - subscribes to their narrow worldview. And that shouting racist at people doesn't constitute an argument or make you morally superior in any way to the person you're screeching it at. Great stuff. :P

A Donald J Trump Presidency, a Republican Senate and a Republican House of Representatives. 2016 has been amazing.

Even more good news emerging from state ballot initiatives. :D

Oklahoma has added the death penalty to its constitution.

Nebraska has voted to repeal the ban on the death penalty.

California early vote returns indicate it will vote to speed up the process of state executions.

Worth noting too how important this election was to the makeup of the US Supreme Court for decades to come. A few judges are likely to die/retire within the next few years which will open up a few vacancies. The next President being the one to decide who is on the court thus gets to decide the political slant of the court meaning the court will now have a very conservative slant for decades to come.

We either get farage going to work in the white house, leaving people to wonder why someone who campaigned hard for brexit immediately left and support for brexit dwindles. Failing that, we have a US president which supports it.

Anyone on the Left who is still wondering why Ukip won the European Elections, the Conservatives won a majority, why we voted to Leave the EU in a referendum and why Trump has been elected US President this video may be for you if you care about ever winning again.

"How many times does the vote not have to go out way before we realise that our argument isn't won by hurling labels and insutls. Tory majority, Brexit, Trump, what next? When will we learn that the key is discussion. The left is responsible for this result because the left have now decided that any other opinion or any other way of looking at the world is unacceptable. We don't debate anymore because the left won the cultural wars so if you're on right you're a freak. You're evil. You're racist. You're stupid. You are a basket of deplorables. How do you think people are going to vote if you talk to them like that? When has anyone ever been persuaded by being insulted or labelled?"

This guy has sense and the Left might actually get somewhere if it listened to him. Judging by the reaction so far, no sign of it.

Anyone on the Left who is still wondering why Ukip won the European Elections, the Conservatives won a majority, why we voted to Leave the EU in a referendum and why Trump has been elected US President this video may be for you if you care about ever winning again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLG9g7BcjKs

(eating my tea haven't watched the video just going by your post)

'When has anyone ever been persuaded by being insulted or labelled?' sorry if i've misread this but isn't this exactly the reason why people didn't get behind trump in the first place on the 'left' by that i assume you mean those who voted in & wanted hillary to be president? i am curious to see how he is as president but a part of me is worried but at the same time i don't properly understand american politics and politics doesn't interest me THAT much to consistently debate on the topic but i do read the majority of threads / debates to try educate myself on them, but isn't this exactly what the 'right' are doing? they don't shy away from labels / being offensive and insulting people themselves? i'm not here to debate with you so don't feel encouraged to go off, i am just genuinely asking a question with hopes of an explanation, not to be badgered with your usual style of response in politic related chat pls ty

ALSO you know it's ok for people to be upset and disappointed that someone they don't believe should be president is, right? they are entitled to their opinions as are you, me and anybody else in the world

I'll start by saying I didn't even back Trump at first. He's not statesman like. BUT you know, as time has gone on, I have just had enough of the left/SJWs becoming so unreasonable with the political correctness that made me realise we needed someone like Trump. We needed someone who was rude. We needed someone who would give it back as good as he got. And Americans obviously thought the same. He's the strong right wing antidote to the stifling shutdown of free discussion over the past few years.

Because there's a difference between disagreement with somebody and labelling your opponents all sorts of 'isms' when they have quite rational and widely held beliefs which you may disagree with but which a lot of people actually hold. One example could be gay marriage for example or serving gay people a baked cake, where if you air a disagreement even if you are polite about it then you're labelled as a homophobe. Or take immigration for example, where if we even attempt to discuss open borders and the effects of mass immigration then people are labelled as racist by the left.

Is opposing gay marriage and believing in cake shop owners right to free expression homophobic? NO
Is opposing mass immigration and believing in the superiority of your culture in your country racist or xenophobic? NO

If you disagree with the two above you're welcome to. Debate it though, don't throw a word and expect people to obey.

ALSO you know it's ok for people to be upset and disappointed that someone they don't believe should be president is, right? they are entitled to their opinions as are you, me and anybody else in the world

Indeed they are. But why is it that it is always those on the left who proceed to call the public stupid, scream for another vote or claim it was all down to some sort of 'ism' whether it is racism, homophobia or sexism. Maybe people just have different opinions to you. The left never accepts this, and seems to think that any opinion held contrary to the mainstream liberal one makes the holder of that opinion somehow evil and morally inferior when all they have is a different worldview. Look at the carry on from Lady Gaga, Robert DeNiro and countless others over what is essentially a regular 4-year election. You'd think Adolf Hitler had just won, it it absurd.

Watch the video, the guy (who identifies as left himself) is spot on.

More than the Obama's - worth $7m - could do. Didn't Michelle take trips on Air Force One for shopping trips?

Hopefully the Trump family will be the First Family, not the Freeloading Family.

The EU is threatening us if we sign a trade deal with America once Trump is in office.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will not attend a 'crisis' meeting in Brussels tomorrow which was arranged to discuss how Europe will deal with the aftermath of the US election result.

Mr Johnson, 52, will not be at the dinner after he told his EU counterparts to end the 'whinge-o-rama' over Donald Trump's victory.

The Foreign Office said that 'an act of democracy has taken place' and they 'do not see the need' for an additional meeting.

Instead, the UK will be represented by a senior official who will attend the event in Belgium.

Mr Johnson will attend a 'regular' Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday where a range of issues will be discussed.

A Foreign Office spokesman told MailOnline: 'The Foreign Secretary will not attend the meeting convened for Sunday.

'There is a regular Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday where a range of issues can be discussed in the normal way.

'We do not see the need for an additional meeting on Sunday because the US election timetable is long established.

'An act of democracy has taken place, there is a transition period and we will work with the current and future administrations to ensure the best outcomes for Britain.'

It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May was warned by a leading German politician that she is 'delusional' if she believes she can get a good trade deal from Trump.

Main reason for wanting a Trump Presidency was that he'd be better for British interests than a Obama/Clinton one. Looks about right.

Practically pennies difference between Obama's (7m) net worth and Trumps (3.7b) net worth.

where did it say the UK would be punished for seeking a trade deal? all I can see is a german politician telling us we're delusional if we think we can get a good trade deal with him?

I think everyone is still sneering at Farage?

Is he trying to do everything he possibly can to get him another 30 seconds in the news since his party has served it's purpose and is no longer required?

That photo of Trump looks like a guy getting back to his Last Vegas hotel room after a long night of drinking, gambling and strippers while Farage looks like the hotel manager trying to fit in.
