Britons to sail the seven seas again with navy passport

UK Passport expected to switch back to more traditional design and colour as Home Office puts out a contract

Then-Ukip leader Nigel Farage was often seen with his passport during the EU referendum

The blue British passport, which was superseded by the burgundy-coloured European Union passport as the UK forged closer links with Europe three decades ago, is to make a return as part of a post-Brexit redesign.

The fondly remembered navy-blue passport began to be phased out in 1988 as the then European Community decided to harmonise documentation across its member states.

Many Britons disliked the slightly smaller burgundy passports, on the cover of which the words European Community appeared above United Kingdom.

The Home Office has put a contract out to tender for the “design, production and personalisation of the UK passport” for 2019, when Britain is due to have left the EU.

Today the Sunday Express reports that discussions have already taken place with potential contractors to produce the new passport.

I really like the passport design our New Zealander cousins have.

Traditional with the navy/black colour and coat of arms, but with the ferns. Britain could maybe do a similar design with the English Rose, Scottish Thistle, Welsh Leek and Nothern Irish Shamrock alongside the coat of arms.

Thoughts?

There is no point in this.

The EU should never have made us change our passports, I agree.

There are more important issues to contend with... although I saw some of the other examples and they look good.

My thoughts are I can't think of something I care less than the colour of my passport.

Nice attempt to twist, but unfortunately I wasn't around to comment in 1988.
In a time with large budget cuts to even basic services, with actually life-impacting legislation being pushed through and a lot of other brexit stuff to sort, this is a waste of limited time and money. Can't believe this is even being entertained as an idea right now.

Also we agreed to it. We were not forced.

I like blue but since I don't walk around with my passport glued to my jacket I couldn't care less what it looks like. It's a booklet that gets ink stamps in it not a fashion accessory

Oh don't be so dramatic. Fact is, every few years the passport design is updated for security and technological reasons - this is always put out in a state contract to a company. The only difference this time is, at the next re-design we'll be removing European Union from the top of it and changing the colour back to what it was. It's not the fact you actually think its a waste of money (after all, you voted to Remain in an organisation that spends millions moving its offices + parliament back and forth between France and Belgium every year) it's that you are annoyed that the symbols of our EU membership are being taken down.

I absolutely cannot wait until all the EU flags are taken down across the country, never to be seen again.

Also we agreed to it. We were not forced.

Our government agreed, not the general public.

The country's sovereignty was so eroded that we couldn't even have our own passport. Pathetic.

I like the colour we currently have. However if/when we change, I hope the colour is distinctive to other passports.
