NSW police are expected to seek the extradition of two teenage boys, aged 15 and 16, who are accused of the stabbing murder of a service station employee during a violent rampage on the ACT border.
Deputy NSW Police Commissioner Catherine Burn declined to confirm reports the letters "IS" was found written in blood at the Queanbeyan Caltex servo, where 29-year-old Pakistani employee Zeeshan Akbar was found fatally injured late on Thursday night.
However, unspecified physical evidence at the service station had led to the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team being brought into the investigation, Ms Burn said in Sydney on Friday.
She said police were taking a look at whether the 16-year-old had links to terrorism.
"It appears ... that there may be links to a modus operandi that we would suggest is indicative of a terrorist attack, inspired or otherwise," she said.
The teens are in custody following a 10-hour crime spree that started at 8pm on Thursday and finished following a police pursuit that travelled into the ACT on Friday morning.
It's alleged they are also behind an attack on a homeless man, an assault at a home unit, and the stabbing of another man whose vehicle was stolen.
An ACT Police spokesman said an extradition hearing for the teens was expected to be held in Canberra Children's Court on Saturday.
