Tesco - Are they good employers?

Hello,

Soon for my first job i was thinking of going into a tesco, are they good employers?

I've worked for tesco for just over 2 years now & I'll tell you what, they treat you really well. As said above, the contracts are very hit and miss so be sure to ask them to fully explain it to you (or I can if you need it). Pay is good, but the main thing that can really ruin the job is your manager. You can have an absolutely amazing manager and adore the job, or you can have a rubbish one and hate it. Although, the job is obviously what you make of it rather than what you're told.

I would definitely recommend it as a first job, but I would also advise you to have future plans. Hope this helps King-Tom;

Jamez; Thanks for the response mate, yeah it's going to be a part time job just while I do my media studies course at college then maybe a little after that to, I think the pay is good and for a first job it's perfect to get a income. Just got to hope the manager I end up with (provided I even get in) is decent haha

I'd imagine they're like every other supermarket employer, but typically if you're taking a job at tesco (in a low skill/paid position), it's not because you have a lot of choice.

Like all supermarket jobs they're popular for part time with college uni etc.

Yeah, thanks Scott, It is literally just to get an income whilst i'm at college :)

Tbh, Tesco does pay better than most supermarkets, but yes it's definitely not where you want to be as a "career" if you can call it that.

What tempts me so much is the fact they do pay a bit more than others, even though i'll be in the 16 yrs wage it's still a decent amount while in college

Tesco pays 16 year olds the same as 50 year olds, so everyone gets the same. But there is a 3-6 months "probation" period where you'll be on slightly less, but after that, your pay will match everyone elses.

I work at Sainsburys so I can't comment on how good Tesco are as employers but I can say as a job while you go through college, it's a good choice. It's pretty basic stuff that's easy to learn, the pay is usually good, it's good experience and I'm willing to bet they'd give you extra hours during summer, breaks, etc. when you've got more time to work.

I workes at Tesco for a few months and they're pretty good and understanding - pays good, monthly booklets with offers and free stuff, discounts online it's pretty nice. I worked in an express store which is drastically different to working in an extra or superstore but Tesco are pretty good employers

Hey buddy just seen this. I have worked at Tesco over the past three years, and I have really enjoyed my time there. Do you know what role you will be applying for? I started off in the Grocery department stacking shelves during twilight hours (4pm-1am) and then I applied for an internal vacancy as a checkout supervisor which is the role I currently do.

Good job while you'll be in education, usually quite flexible. A flexible contract does mean that you will get contracted hours every week but if they ask you to work more hours, they are entitled to do so. Pay is going up by 10% over the next two years however the negative side to that is they are taking away the time and a half pay on a sunday away.
