Trump overplayed his hand then shut up months ago when the tension was last heightened.
Now the us is a possible target for n Korea, so much for the tactical patience being over that let them develop the weapons as now they actually can target us rather than just their allies.

The tactical patience was an Obama administration policy that is seemingly being dropped by the Trump administration, so not sure how you're pinning it on him. For the first time, it actually seems like a US President is going to respond with similar displays of force alongside Japan and South Korea everytime North Korea tries it on. It's brinkmanship yeah, but what's the alternative?
North Korea can't reach the United States. Even Japan is a stretch, they keep failing after launch.

If you read what I said you'd see I was in no way pinning it on the Trump administration, what I said was so much for the tactical patience being over, like Trump claimed.
He through a few aircraft carriers into the region had some talks with China and that was it, nothing for a few months, letting them develop their missiles further.
I don't think N. Korea particularly underestimates the force of S Korea, Japan and USA, so showing off for the sake of it isn't really going to do much
The missile they successfully tested yesterday on normal trajectory can reach Alaska from what I read.
