In 2002/03, Maxis released The Sims Online, one of the "boldest" and "greatest" projects from unca Will Wright.
There, you could create a "family" (1 user per avatar, children were unknown by the game's database) and, if your server's monthly bills were up to date (yes, players had to pay some dollars monthly to play it), you could control your character in a really giant "neighborhood" (filled with Sims controlled by another people) under the same engine from The Sims 1 which, according to the simmers that were getting sick of waiting for the 'upcoming' Sims 2, seemed quite old-fashioned
...Unfortunately it has flopped, some months later :'(
They tried to make an official (and free) re-release of TSO called EA Land but it hasn't lasted that long and sinked too!
Now, in 2016-2017, a group of fans went to the mystic ruins of the now-useless pieces of TSO's structures, hidden on EA servers, in order to try to relaunch this game for the nostalgic and curious folks, even if unofficially
And it seems that everything's working now. The last time I visited the website (some hours ago), it said that +900 people were online - which is something, considering that they hardly promote this game to the big masses
Have you heard about this fangame?? I'm downloading it now while am sleeping to see if it worth it - always wanted to play it, since when I was 11 -- so excitedddddd
