have an 11 year old son who constantly picks his butt or crotch and I am convinced it's nothing more than a bad habit. His teacher believes that it could be the reason my son is not as accepted at school as some of the other kids. She also mentioned that he is not as socially mature as some of the other kids in his class. I have tried ignoring the picking but we are going on almost a year of this bad habit. Are there any other suggestions out there to help? I'm afraid he's going to be such an outcast that there will be no fixing it if we don't correct the behavior soon. Help!

This very interesting Thread has been moved by despect (Forum Manager) to Health, Life & Relationships as it is better suited there.

Hunny i think youre best option is maybe putting a big cast on his fingers so he cant pick, then he will get in the habbit of not doing it

I think that behavior is fairly normal for a child, albeit mainly for younger children. Kids explore their crevices and bits, then they grow up. Not sure what country you live in, but in the UK a doctor would be able to give good advice. I don't think this is really the right forum to seek guidance on such a matter.

Yeah, I recommend you take him to a doctor or something along those lines and see what they have to say about it. Hopefully he'll grow out of it.

I'm sure this is one of the first things that you did, but have you tried asking him exactly why he feels the need to be picking at himself all the time? Is he in pain? Does it itch? Has someone told him to do it? Finding out information as to the cause of his actions might help you develop ways of overcoming them.

I try all the time but i either get attacked or his fingers in my face which isn't pleasant at all.
