View Full Version : Dislike Button!

How many times have you been on facebook and read something someone else has posted, only to respond to yourself with "Why Doesn't Facebook Have A Dislike Button"

Well we are not facebook and we can do this! I do see where this could relatively be a bad idea tho, but as long as people are not abusing it by "disliking" posts negatively, this could be a great way to get additional feedback from everyone on the forum. not everyone is going to like everything, and not everyone is going to dislike everything, none of us are going agree all the time. so lets voice how we personally see things.

i think that having a dislike button would just further decrease the amount of posts made on the forum, disagreement drives discussion
this would have been cool back in the day though

Velvet is right - living with these new standards of webcommunication daily, we're currently always looking for the quickest and easy way, even if unconsciously. A Like/Dislike button is the minimalist derivative of an "I concur/I disagree" kind of post and, well, of a solid, verbal and HUMAN interaction a discussion forum is made

I say bring rep back.

Don't quite see the point behind a dislike button - if you don't like it then just read past it. Causes too much hassle, and stops any form of communication going on.

I don't personally like the idea of a dislike button because I don't wan to encourage any form of negativity on here, personally anyway!

BRING REP BACK

Guess that most of people didn't see reps only as an one of the possible alternatives for the like system, as a way of agreeing/disagreeing with somebody's points, but also as a kind of personal score, more or less like the post counter? So, if that's possible, a "like counter" system might be the way to go

I don't see the need of a dislike button... I think a dislike botton will bring people to hit the button and then 'leave the thread' without a comment...

Yeah personally and from a nostalgic point of view I agree with you! But likes are so much easier to explain and use for new members especially. Gets a lot more use than rep did!

I think we have some way of doing like counters or at least show the top liked threads or posts, maybe we can look into it for the stats threads Joe;?

It will definitely be more used, there's no limit on it :P having counters would invalidate the entire argument that was given for changing it though, since it was claimed the competitive aspect of rep was bad

There were quite a few people with higher rep powers who wouldn’t give any or use reallly sparingly cos their high power would be a lot to a new member! Personally my biggest argument for it was always the universality and discrepancy between new/older members.

I wouldn’t personally put lifetime rep counters on the profile etc but monthly likes in the monthly stats thread maybe?

Well aware it's gone and not coming back, just saying there's no point changing to a non-counting system and then showing counts anyway - that's single point rep with a different name, which was an option that got turned down

would you disagree with even like monthly stats? “Most liked post of the month” “most liked user” etc? As a way to encourage people to post to get those prizes!

I wouldn't directly oppose it because I don't have a problem with displays of online popularity, but it does rather fly in the face of the entire reason we were given for the original change (apart from "other sites have likes!"), especially on an unlimited system

Obviously I wasn’t the one who made the decision but the difference between rep as it was and likes is that the rep counters were on the profile bit on every post as an ever-growing number and new users would always be intimidated or not bother with it. I wouldn’t particularly want to go back to that with lifetime stats but month or weekly seems like a nice way to encourage without also discouraging?

I was a proponent of the universality of likes though and that is the main reason I oppose going back to rep!

Showing the stats monthly then resetting it no problem, giving prizes for something so easily manipulated (your likes are only limited by number of people on the forum x number of posts) seems like asking for cliques and exclusions
