Majority of votes want full control over Britain's trade policy

A new poll from BMG for Change Britain finds that an overwhelming majority of voters – and clear majorities of Remain and Labour voters – say Britain must be completely free to strike its own trade deals after Brexit. 71% of voters agreed that we must be free to negotiate our own trade deals with other countries without involvement of the EU. Which means, Theresa and Jezza, not being part of any form of customs union.

Sir Keir Starmer should take note, as 64% of Labour voters demanded the freedom to strike new trade deals. 60% of Remain voters agreed. Starmer has never managed to explain his unicorn policy of getting the EU to let us join a customs union that also allows us to strike our own free trade deals with other countries. This poll is effectively a resounding rejection of Labour’s customs union policy by Labour voters.

A majority of Remain voters also agreed that Brexit meant taking back control of trade policy, and 58% of Remainers said the referendum result must be respected. Both Number 10 and Starmer should take note – even Remainers want Brexit done properly…

This shouldn't even be under discussion given we had a referendum on it.

But this week, this and many other amendments comes back from the House of Lords to the House of Commons... and we await to see whether the government is defeated and to what extent Labour split on this when the vote comes.

Both sides (rebels on one hand and Brexiteers on other) can't win.

The parliamentary drama continues going into tonight as the Commons is still sitting as we speak voting on the Lords amendments.


First we had the SNP MPs unable to accept (another) referendum result walking out of the Commons...

Then we had a superb speech by Labour's Caroline Flint MP.

And then we had the EEA vote with multiple members of the Shadow Cabinet resigning from the frontbench after defying the whip.

So... looks like Number 10 has fooled the rebels with a last minute change to the agreed amendment. It's all very confusing if you're following it, let alone not following it. But there's now a government-backed amendment which doesn't allow Parliament to block Brexit if there's no deal, and the rebels are getting the Lords to re-create their proposed amendment next week which does allow Parliament to block Brexit if there's no deal.

The remainer rebels are claiming they don't want to block Brexit but if that's the case why are they seeking to change an amendment to give Parliament that power? The Government has agreed that Parliament can reject/accept the deal, but not halt Brexit. So, last post on this.

It's a huge milestone this Bill being passed as it now waits for Royal Assent from HM The Queen, as it repeals the European Communities Act of 1972 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Communities_Act_1972_(UK)) that took us into the EEC in the first place - effectively the legal basis for our membership has now been repealed and only exists as a time-limited feature in the "Great Repeal Bill" aka the EU Withdrawal Bill.

Really is an historic moment and a big constitutional one.

Other acts will be forthcoming over the next months/couple of years on Trade and Customs, Immigration, Fisheries, Agriculture, Business Regulation, the Environment and much more as we once again find ourselves in control of our own country making our own laws.

If you do a teaching qualification here, then depending on grants/where you go it can be upto £9k - and that isn't including living costs, especially if you had to move to another city away from home. Plus, I like travelling/being abroad so ESL is ideal for me.

I'm not completely stuck on Spain either, would prefer as it is close by/less of a culture shock for first time abroad - plus I know bits of the language, but yeah I would move pretty much anywhere if i'm honest. Saigon, Bombay... whatever. Why not while I can?

I am not applying for teacher training in Spain, already done a TEFL certificate which I paid for myself. In a few years if I enjoy teaching and want to return home/go upwards in that career, i'll take a PGCE. Just had an interview this moment actually. :)
